Good morning all

After some advice please.

I am off on a stalk about two hours from home latter this month. If successful I want to bring the carcass back home with me, hopefully a Roe.

So, the question is what is the best way to keep the carcass cool while traveling back home

Thank you in advance

It should be fine for an hour or so. On a hot day, once you've got it to the car, you could cut through the chest, breast and prop it open with a spreader. Make sure the carcase is as stretched out far as you have space for, preferably on its back. Open the window/turn on the air con. You're good to go.

Hot weather I use the heck peck carrier on the Back of my truck, with a plasterers bath with a Nylon drain mesh inside , plastic board to seal on the top And half a dozen cool blocks in disposable plastic sealed bags that you bin after use, keeps the blocks clean, then cover it with the elasticated Cover you get with the carrier - main thing is to get the beast cooled properly before you transport it

ive used that on many occasions with no negative results, Julian @ JMS arms near Brighton do all the kit carrier, plasterers bath and the cover, had one for years and it works Carrying anything

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned a roof rack.

I once brought two Sika back to London from Sutherland on the roof rack of the 110.

My wife said, "You cannot drive around London with two dead deer on top of the Landy".

The Stalker replied:- "You cannot drive around here, unless you have two dead deer on top of the Landy".

All parties survived the trip unscathed.

When I have stalked away from home I have taken a whole coolbox full of frozen ice packs, which will remain frozen for 24 hours at least. I also take a clean cotton sheet. If I'm lucky enough to get a deer I absolutely pack the body cavity with the ice packs, wrap the whole thing up in the sheet, and put it in a tray or box. Have driven 8 hours plus like that.
I wouldn't bother for shorter journeys.

I wouldn't be too concerned. It that sort of situation I just whack up the air con to full. Just make sure it is bleed fully and cleanly gralloched.

Thank you all for your reply's, advice and thoughts

Ice packs and air-con up it will be

Because this time of year Stalking is either early morning or evening i tend to suspend gralloch in the shade put a small chest spreader in and try to let the beast cool as long as possible. never had a problem with a 45min-1hr journey home after that.
