Munty head, process to measure and then have whole head mounted: Advice needed

I have in the deep freeze a munty head which on a rough and ready measure will be silver and possibly gold. If it is a silver or above I would like to have it measured and then have a complete head mount.

Do I send to a suitable taxidermist to defrost, skin out and get the skull measured before remounting or is it possible to have the head measured whilst it is still frozen and then knowing the medal status send/take to a suitable taxidermist?

Any info on the process and a recomended taxidermist in the South West/Bristol area would be usefull.

CIC require the head to be cleaned and dried for 30 days even for MJ where there is no score for weight. So I think your only option is to get a taxidermist to prepare it for you and he should get it measured for you during the taxidermy process.

I have just sent a munty off to the taxidermist, To skin off , he is posted head back so I can get it CIC scored , then head goes back off to taxidermist for shoulder mount, bit off a faff, but have sent mine and a friends off together so not to bad, I not sure they can score them mounted as taxidermist may of made antlers wider apart ,I could be wrong on this one though .

You are correct Jon. The head can't be scored once it has had a cape fitted and mounted.

Are we not talking muntjac? If so, why would it make any difference once it has been mounted?

Took mine to the Game Fair and had it measured by the CIC - didn’t seem to cause an issue at the time.

Taxidermist could mount the antlers into I different position Is the reason I was told, I want mine scored and mounted , so going with what I have been told 😊.
