Shooting game in back garden - legal?

Yes is the simple answer, provided a) you have lawful permission to shoot from the owner of the land (and if its leasehold the leasehold may not hold the shooting rights over their backgarden), b) any projectile you fire remains within the garden, c) you do not have a restricted FAC and d) the animals and birds are in season or with general licence and you obey normal protocols of humane kill, appropriate calibre etc.

The fact that it is legal may mean not its advisable or without its dangers.

I do know of one stalker from Scotland who used was invited to the leafy suburban gardens in Surrey to deal with Muntjac - they were causing a real problem eating roses and once he had shot one he was getting invites from all the neighbouring house. Best vantage points were upstairs bedrooms ........ i leave the rest to your imagination.

Just left my desk to clobber a grey squirrel with the 12b, very satisfying. I am in a red alert area and boundary between reds and greys, so ecologically quite important.

Its a very rural area, so no issues at all, no neighbours to complain. I've shot roe deer from the window with an unmoderated rifle before - not advisable though, it rattles the windows a bit!

Reminds me of a chap down South, he regularly used his .243, whilst in bed, shooting Deer entering his garden from the window cill, I went along with Ian as he usually gralloched them sort of an on call arrangement 😆😎

I've always wanted to try the string and bell technique. You stake some meat or other bait in the garden tied to a long piece of string. The string comes in through the window via hooks to a bell near your bed. In the middle of the night the fox pulls the bait, rings the bell, you wake up and fill it in with the peashooter.

Couldn't you just tie the string to the trigger? I mean you can't put a price on a good night's sleep. If it's not a fox, it doesn't really matter. They shouldn't be in your garden at that time of night.

The bell would scare the fox off. You have to tie the string to your big toe....or old chap!

It's worth reminding folk that a single shot...the first shot...is actually very had for anyone to quite know what the noise was or where exactly it came from. OK so modern cars now don't backfire. And the last time I ever heard a car backfire it must be two decades plus but lorries do drop pallets and other heavy loads. So unless you are expecting to hear a gunshot the reality is that when you do first hear a single shot...the first shot...your near neighbours if they are not aware that you shoot will probably think that it is something else altogether. And for small vermin such as squirrels and winged vermin a modern PCP air rifle with a moderator makes scarce no noise at all as does a .22LR using the CCI CB Long or RWS Z-Partonen even unmoderated.

Nonsense. Given your good point about people being unable to place the first shot, if you're going to do it all, there's no point pussying around. Use a DG rifle or, if you're leaving the job to the children, nothing lighter than a .270.
