Hmmph. That squashes my theory that they would work in geographical areas where they couldn't get enough salt in their diet...I admit this was based largely on the book The Singing Forest read in childhood where the deer trek off to the shore to chew seaweed and lick the rocks to acquire the missing minerals.Got two salt licks out 500 yards apart. One is regularly used the other never been touched. Identical blocks. They’re fickle.
I think it would attract more squirrels than deer here. You may not have such a problem in NI.Peanut butter. Cut bottom off PNB plastic jar, screw two screws through inside of lid at waist height into stout tree then screw jar back on to lid. They will clear it in no time - works for whitetail in far off climes too!

Sadly we do and the tree rats are giving our reds a very hard time. Still a good indicator though.I think it would attract more squirrels than deer here. You may not have such a problem in NI.
