Just sitting watching the near gale battering the conservatory windows and reflecting on a rather good though slightly unusual day yesterday - thanks largely to SD.
The day started with my meeting up with a new SD member who had recently expressed an interest (in his SD intro) in game syndicate membership and rifle/deer shooting. I responded to this and so we met up yesterday morning and I showed him over our pheasant shoot and as promised I let him try my .308 at a few targets - under my tutelage and strict control. I think we would both agree that he really enjoyed the morning and I suspect he is now hooked on all things shooting, indeed we are to get together again next week to continue where we left off. The thing is, crusty old bugger that I am, I really enjoyed seeing new blood becoming enthusiastic about our sport - probably as much, if not more, than he did.
Now, I had originally intended to also bring my .222 to start the day for the new entrant gradually but thanks to an unexpected early morning phone call yesterday morning from another SD member (who had responded to a posting of mine a few weeks ago and very kindly offered to take me out for a stalk on his return from the mainland) I had to modify my plans. This chap, again someone I had never met, kindly picked me up and true to his word, took me to his ground where despite deteriorating conditions we saw several groups of fallow including a couple of nice bucks. Because of the fading light and certainly not for lack of effort on his part, and to my new friend’s obvious disappointment, we were unable to get a shot. For my part, I thoroughly enjoyed this very different second half of my day, particularly the chat to and from his fantastic ground and as I told him, cared not a jot that no beast was shot. Indeed continuing his generosity he has very kindly offered to repeat the outing before our seasons close. So a very big thank you to him, I will spare his blushes but he knows who I mean.
Sooo, what a strange but super day, in these often self-centred times the opportunity of sharing by giving in the am and by very generous receiving in the pm was quite unique - serendipity in its finest form. All down to SD and the common wish to perpetuate and share our beloved sport. Where would you get it chaps? My cup runneth over.
