The New Normal Pup Price

Countryboy is correct in that the large scale breeders that I refer to have not increased their prices and do have very long waiting lists. Their own standards, expectations and codes exceed or mirror those of any breed club, in fact one of the breeders is at the helm of the National Breed Club and is a respected judge at the National and International working trials for the breed.

I would give my right arm to be in their position.

Ok, so they should be the base of the breed clubs then. Any that refuse to comply, we’ll stone or put in prison.

Must admit I'm not really into extra paperwork, the etc, but the breeding in this country has went so far down hill only way to go altho too late I'm afraid.
Althou I think to far gone now, far too many agendas and politics involved never mind the massive amounts of money inolved.
Some off the stories u hear on the FT circuit are unbelievable, petty cliques tha would embarrass a bunch off school girls and I'm sure showing is the same.

And to be perfectly honest in my opinion the 2 worst groups for changing the breeds rapidly over the pat 30yrs are the show breeders and the FT breeders.
Both aspects are too specialised now and no longer just the best looking or best worker by exaggerating traits not always beneficial to the breed.

I think the kennel club could do far more than they do. They are slightly improved nowadays but their rules could far better serve dog welfare than they do. I get the feeling that some of the top puppy farmers have too much say there.

I think it’s a completely different thing when we look at continental or even American kennels. Using your list of breeder types, I wouldn’t consider them number 1 commercial kennels, I would say they’re more like number 3’s that have just got out of hand and got large.

I think people in the uk have a different mindset. Far more driven by money or influence. I sometimes think that our larger kennels standards are more an exercise in virtue signalling than in welfare.

Perhaps a 'professional' kennel might be more appropriate than a 'commercial' but my point was large scale, VAT registered, staff employed etc.

Yes, we do have a completely different attitude in the UK. Large, professional kennels are frowned upon in the UK and yet the emphasis on pedigrees, bloodlines, and complimentary breeding plans is generally of a much higher standard on the Continent. I am hugely embarrassed when I see posts of "My bitch is in season - looking for a good stud dog" or "my friend has a good bitch and is looking for a good stud dog". Harsh as it may seem........I truly believe that if anyone has the slightest intention of breeding a bitch in the future, the homework and research should start at that point! By the time it comes anywhere near its season there should be a handful of carefully sifted options.

However Keith, you have already said that these people don't have a clue so studying will not help them much really. This is where the 'commercial' kennels win hands down. They only breed from the best and line them with suitable dogs as they have a reputation to maintain. Their dogs are health tested for everything and produce predictable puppies. My recent puppy came from one of these and cost £2000 so yes the price has gone up. However, I was also offered "Cr ap" from non health tested dogs for the same money. In my opinion only an idiot would buy non health tested labs these days and I told people offering that it was way too much money and not right. Not that they would care what I thought of them though!

Why would the KC want to do anything to stop puppies from being bred? Every registration is a payday for them.
That's exactly why they want the likes of these designer mongrels to get "pedigree" acceptance..

Well, yeah. That’s my point. The lead organisation puts profit before welfare and so, in my opinion, do the large breeders. The whole system is rotten with money. Health testing is mandatory but not because it’s good for the breed, it’s because it signals virtue. The fact that it improves the health of dogs is a secondary objective in my opinion. Goofy or aggressive dogs being bred and sold to folk who think they’ve chosen well because it has a list of things it’s been checked for. It’s the kennel club approved puppy farmer scheme.

I’m generally talking about the pet market here, since most dogs bred will end up pets. I recognise that ‘dog’ people are more likely to care about things like historic breeding and look elsewhere but ‘dog’ people are a tiny proportion of the industry. It must very a very large majority of dogs that end up pets though and that’s what will pay the bills.

Good points but, as I have said before, there have also been many cases of working-dog breeders selling hard-going, strong, driven pups of excellent breeding to totally unsuitable pet homes - just because they have stumped up the money. That is one of, if not THE, biggest problem I have witnessed in the past 12 months.

Absolutely. Playing devils advocate, could it be argued that we need people to breed crap dogs so that folk who want them as an accessory can have them? Horses for courses or dogs for owners?

If Stan the man wants a BMH because he goes stalking three times a year, is he better with a crap one? He probably isn’t going to train it. If he gets a fantastic dog, he’s depriving someone who would work it and he’ll probably lose it in a wood anyway?

People who seriously work their dogs always seem to be able to find one. Maybe we don’t have any issues?
