Rituals and offerings

I'm not usually superstitious, but I've come back empty handed from the last four outings, but seen completely white ('spirit deer'), a Sika stag and a white Red hind on two of the outings. A bit wu wu, but it feels significant :-|
I've asked Artemis nicely 8 times in a roe (ha ha) now if she would see fit to let me have a deer, but I have clearly offended her at some point and am condemned to walk the woods and fields with a pointless rifle over my shoulder like a latter-day Odysseus with his oar. Only, you know, less significant.

My friend, I get the chance of Roe twice a year in Perthshire so cometh the hour, cometh the man. At least you have a chance of Roe, over here they do not exist, apparently…….

Roe, roe your boat…

Sorry, had to be done

What's hit's history and what's mythed's mythstory. Following the latter theme, it could be far worse - consider poor Actaeon, though his state might not be without some advantage, albeit temporary:

Walking the Woods, by Bewe

I would I were Actaeon, whom Diana did disguise,
To walk the woods unknown whereas my lady lies;
A hart of pleasant hue I wish that I were so,
So that my lady knew alone me and no mo;

To follow thick and plain, by hill and dale alow,
To drink the water fain, and feed me with the sloe.
I would not fear the frost, to lie upon the ground,
Delight should quite the cost, what pain so that I found.

The shaling nuts and mast that falleth from the tree
Should serve for my repast, might I my lady see;
Sometime that I might say when I saw her alone,
"Behold thy slave alone, that walks these woods unknown!'

8 times? That is nothing! I have only just managed to break a run of blank trips where I dare not even admit to the actual number of blank trips for fear of being ridiculed and condemned by the SD collective, let alone the Greek gods, to a life of veganism!

Good luck breaking the jinx. I feel your pain 😉

Over the years I've shot my share of deer. Now I'm happy watching the roe out in the back field. It nice to see their yearly life cycle. I may be loosing the plot but I've even got names for some of them :). I'll still take one for the freezer and still like killing boar.

anthropomorphic
Please don't use big words that I have to Google:D

Joking aside I share the same sentiments as others in relation to duck shooting, I would rather wait on a flight pond at dusk, I have done the driven duck thing, not for me at all.

Now back to respect of the animal, like many on here it's not just a recreational outing to me, its a job that needs to be done, but I often give the deer a quick pat and apologise, but not always, depends on my mood at the time, and these days with age I often forget!

But when we talk about rituals and respect, how about disrespect of the animal, this is common in hunting shows from across the pond, high fives, screams, hugging, group hugging, etc, etc

Cheers

Dunno about that Devon, both Meateater and Fresh Tracks are clearly based on a foundation of deep respect for the animals they hunt and their environments. Neither shy away from the ethics and psychology of hunting or conservation.

11% of ammo sales in the states goes to conservation, habitat and wildlife management this represents billions $$, the angling community do similar.

Wildlife conservation in the USA goes back to the conservationists and hunters Teddy Roosevelt, Aldo Leopald. And American / Scot John Muir although not a hunter.

However for the flip side of the coin:
hunting-isnt-conservation

I agree in relation to Meateater, and I have the greatest respect for Randy Newberg (having met him several times in person), but take a look here as a prime example of the kind of video I was referring to 22:47

Appalling display, isn't it? I get the excitement. We all do, of course. But that is exactly the kind of reaction that will stir up anti-hunting feelings amongst people. Hell, if it offends even hunters, Christ knows it would send true antis into orbit. And to be honest, I really couldn't blame them

Agree entirely but if you watch any live american show “whooping” is de rigeur. Sadly.

Im not offended.
The context, having watched it all. Well earned imo. So what if he gave a couple of hoots.
He put in the sweat and hard days.
He had respect for his prey, he also said:
"What a beautiful animal"
"What an emotional deal"
"I've been crying like a baby over here"
