DSC1 Shooting Assessment

Haha ill rephrase as factual to when when I did it a month or so ago and I was worried about not being able to practice the right stuff beforehand so just wanted to help the OP out with the conditions I was in
Same as I shot a good few years ago just you lads need to think outside the box instead all jumping through the hoop of fire, I used my sticks for the whole test as that is how I shoot so to change that for one test with years of practice is just stupid.... The masses talk about practicing their shooting once a month etc then have to change what they do for 7/9 shots....See if you was learn to drive in a KA then come the day of your test was given a lwb series 2 landrover you would be ****ed...still a manual 2 door vehicle...

Expecting one of you neutral replies Tom lol

I agree
I think if I remember right they said you were allowed to use anything you would normally use on a stalk so by rights as you say could do the 100m shot off sticks

The requirement from DMQ for the first part of the Deer Target phase is that the candidate shoots 2 rounds from the prone position or from a simulated high seat. These are the only two options available for the candidate to choose from. The assessor can and must make “reasonable adjustments” for any candidate with a physical disability, medical or other condition which might disadvantage them when undertaking the shooting test, or for that matter any of the other DSC1 modules. The fact that a candidate rarely or never shoots from the prone position whilst “in the field” is immaterial. It is a shooting test at an inanimate deer silhouette with a prescribed “course of fire” & defined target areas which the candidate must complete to the required DMQ standard. The candidate may, if they wish, use any aids that are normally found/accepted whilst stalking in the field, however some of these aids may clearly not be suitable for the position from which the candidate is required to shoot.

I did all three off quad sticks, can't shoot prone with a bipod as my neck won't bend sufficiently. All of the above advice is good including the head shot , at 20 m aim 1.5 inches below the top of the head between the ears. Stay cool everyone wants you to pass.

I did dsc 1 last week and failed the shooting test !!! With my own rifle. What I really struggled with was shooting a black silhouette, I don’t usually struggle with shooting I’m out at least once a week with the rifle. I don’t know wether nerve got the better of me or what. I think at least 4 of us failed. I really enjoyed the course and will be re taking the test as soon as I can. I’m pretty confident I passed the rest of the assessments, won’t find out for six weeks.
I spend a lot of time studying the manual before the course, but really should of looked at the shooting test a bit more.
it’s a lot of information to take in three days and we did six assessments,
Friday, large game and lantra meat hygiene
Saturday, shooting and safety
Sunday, visual and main dsc1 paper
By Sunday evening my brain was fried.
Very happy I done it and I learnt so much.

Book a re test with anyone when you get your results, only £25. If the shooting test is the only thing I have to retake, it’s not so bad. At least I have an excuse to give the wife as to why I need to practice so much!!

Got my DSC1 coming up very shortly and was planning on taking my own rifle to complete the shooting assessment part.

My plan was to take advantage of the zeroing at 100m to ensure that rifle is ok, I will of course do this before hand but doesn't hurt to check again on the day. I know the grouping phase has now been removed.

The 2 shots @100m prone, I was planning to use my backpack with coat inside and perhaps my rolled up rifle slip as someone else mentioned on another thread to steady at the back. I don't have a bipod, but I do have some home made quad sticks for the 70m shots.

The 10m-20m headshot part - Is there anything I need to be aware of when shooting this close? I know if you shoot really close (less than this distance) the barrel is obviously lower than the scope reticle that you need to be aware of.

Possibly over-thinking it all, but I'm trying to be prepared :)
Practice makes perfect, get it right beforehand and you will be fine on the day

I did dsc 1 last week and failed the shooting test !!! With my own rifle. What I really struggled with was shooting a black silhouette,
No-one should underestimate the difficulty of the shooting test on the black target with no defined target circle.

On my level 1, 2 out of 6 candidates failed the shoot. We also had 2 people come to do retakes and 1 passed, 1 failed. So 3 out of 8 failed - a pretty high rate!

On both of our course's fails, it was because they both put one round just outside the chest circle but were in, but with the other 5 shots in the chest and head.

Regardless of shooting position, I would thoroughly recommend getting to know where the scoring circles are on the silhouette, as you can't see them through the scope. Pointless getting a great group but in the wrong place!

I bought the black silhouette and inserts from the BDS and practiced on them several times before taking the level 1.

The test changed this year to the below.

Range.
100 m
70 m
10 - 20 m
2 shots at each, 100 and 70 chest shot can be taken how you wish.10-20 to head must be standing

• At 100 m – any position may be used
• At 70 m – either sitting, kneeling or standing position must be used
• At 10 - 20 m – standing position must be used

Checking the DMQ site now says that 100m must be taken from prone or simulated high seat. Hmm.. DSC1 – Deer Management Qualification
