Dsc1 shooting test resit

A couple of the guys failed on my test. Indeed I had to go around again as I had one flyer on the first attempt, and I shoot regularly at a club and being mentored…..it happens, especially if not used to the equipment provided.

Plenty will fail it as many people get ushered into DSC by the police as a requirement before they’ll grant a rifle - which means some have never had a chance to shoot or practice, or possibly not practice with the specific rifle and setup they use for the DSC.

It doesn’t help that there are inconsistencies between the people doing the DSC - I’ve read some of them on here - some get to practice, some don’t, some are told not to adjust the scope?? (What a load of nonsense!) etc.

Make sure you have practiced each part of the test at least 5 times!

This is true there was some guys on my course wasn’t allowed a “deer” caliber until they done the DSC1… The reason for my T3 Hunter .243 was for target shooting 👀

People get "ushered" because they start the process before they have thought it through, then once in the "system" then fences have to be jumped. Learning to drive is what many people start once the have a provisional licence with it being reasonable they should understand they need to take lessons and gain experience. To ignore the basic examples of what we do (well most of us) in our daily lives then these type of posts will roll on again and again.

They get ushered because the police will do anything in many cases to make sure nothing is their accountability - many don’t even know what a DSC entails yet is used as a buzzword.

It should not be linked to a grant at all: if they want minimum proficiency then they should create training that is just that - training for firearms in general and not just falling onto a course specific to deer stalking.

The OP is new to shooting, according to his intro, so perhaps lack of opportunities to prepare?
Plenty of experienced stalkers fail that simple test too. They're the ones you ought to be critical of.

When I sat my test, two experienced shots failed. One was nerves and the other was due to over confidence and using a stupid set up that he hadn’t used before.

It’s not uncommon at all - it’s very simple to the “my rifle is 1 MOA” yet when many are asked on the spot to do it I would say the majority can’t do it consistently.

Backfire did a very good demo of this when they offered up $1000 to whoever did a 1” group in the 1” circle - I don’t believe anyone did it until a young lad with nothing to prove shot it and achieved it.

The OP shouldn’t beat himself up over this: he isn’t the first and won’t be the last to fluff the DSC1 shooting test.

I once watched Mr ‘there’s nothing you can tell me about anything’ balls his DSC1 test up to my amusement (he was an insufferable arse).

Try and sort out your positioning-especially on sticks so it becomes automatic on re-test day.you can do this ‘dry’ or with an air rifle.

If you don’t have your own rifle try and use something smaller calibre if the assessor has a couple of loan rifles: less recoil and muzzle flip etc.

Most of all know the shoot (it’s not complicated) and your point of aim for each distance.

I did the Wild Boar shooting test in Oct and had to go through the steps above in order to be confident: different target / different shoot (I’m in DDM and our Buck Test is slightly different to DSC1). So there’s no shame in getting back to basics.

And finally, on the day…..relax.

Good luck!

There are dozens of things in life that we are responsible for each day without being "ushered" by the police, from what I see these days people walk along the streets looking at their phone or sit and wait for their car to be washed so it it not surprising they don't look into what is involved in firearms

Hi, Iv recently failed my shooting assessment but I’m struggling to find a course near to me in West Yorkshire to resit that part. Does anybody do private assessments etc

Thanks in advance
If you have not got fixed up yet, give Anthony at Humberside Shooting Ground a call. When I did my DSC1 last year with BDS there were a couple of shooters who fluffed the shooting test and I'm certain he said he is an approved assessor for retakes.
