Gun safe fitted to a car- BMW Estate

Hi guys

My main vehicle is very un-stalking like- a BMW 5 series estate. I do have a little Jimmy for close journeys- but would like to fit a gun safe to the BMW.

Has anyone sucessfullly done this ? Width ways it's likely to be tight- perhaps 110cm- which would just about fit a rifle without mod I expect. Alternative would be to drop one of the rear seats down- but as this would need to be reverseable - the safe would have to be removable so I could use all the rear seats.

Any advice or experience would be great. I know I should just buy a truck- but I do so many miles- a motorway cruiser is a necessity.

Thanks

Seams one hell of a pilaver, especially as modern BMWs generally have blacked out windows, luggage covers and decent security.

Can you not find somewhere on the chasis to anchor a cable and trigger lock?

Don't go messing around with the rear seat bases (which you'd have to do to get the seat backs out of the way fully to get a safe flat in the boot stretching through to the passenger compartment - the seat bases have occupancy sensors for the seatbelt warning system - if one of those connectors isn't right then it's an MOT failure. In addition, if a safe is easily removable then it's easily removable by others too.

Far better with a safe either widthwise, or the gun secured by steel cable to a point.

Fit a decent dog guard, use that to secure the gun-safe to, it’d keep the safe secured and tucked in behind the rear seats?

The safest gun is the one which others don't know of. A dark coloured gun slip tucked in the footwell behind the front seats combined with tinted glass usuallly does a pretty good job at that.
Or simply in the boot with the cover drawn.
Of course don't leave your mobile, a camara or a fancy looking brief case visibly in the car. This increases the chance for a break-in by a multiple - with or without a gun safe in the car.

Thanks for the replies guys.....

After more thought and reading some responses- I think you're right. A safe will attract attention and be a real faff.

I envisaged attaching the the boot somehow- but potentially the safe resting over the folding seats. Safe woukd be bolted to car base from the inside- same as your safe at home. So not easy to remove.

But I agree- cable through the trigger guard- or better still- through the bolt hole coming out where the magazine- should be pretty secure.

Good point. I think with the parcel shelf it won't be visible. Nor will any other shooting kit to attract attention. Will keep the back seats messy too!

Don't leave the gun in the car unattended and if you have to keep it out of sight and take the bolt and ammo with you.

Which is it ? Don't do it? Or do it but remove bolt and ammo ? 98% of the time- I do the former. 2% of the time- I do the latter. But that 2% still makes me uncomfortable.

I Do not feel comfortable having a gun that can be taken just by breaking a window. The curse of an estate car i suppose. Even if it's not visible.

So-

Parcel shelf so gun case is out of sight
Generic square plastic gun case- i may even put a few stickers on it so it looks like a violin or a pair of pool cues maybe?! Not that it will ever be visible....
Car is alarmed and will only be left during the day. One hour max.
I found an area in the boot I can weld an attachment point to
Gun will be attached to this fixed point.......

The only other problem is how do I attach the gun to the fixed point?

Lots of videos on YouTube on padlocks being picked in seconds.

Flexible plastic coated cable will be easiest to feed through breach etc. But easily cut with even cheap wire cutters.

chain harder to cut but may be too thick to fit through breach and may damage gun

Chain or even a D bike lock may fit through a large calibre CF- but a little rimfire will only have the space for a thin bit of cable

Needs more thought but further suggestions v welcome thanks :)

So, what you have to do is, in a nutshell as much as is reasonable to ensure it's security. It doesn't have to be the best of the best, but enough to secure it from any opportunistic thieves. You could, after all spend an absolute fortune, starting with buying a car for the purpose.

It needs to be secured effectively, it needs to be out of sight, with nothing else visible to indicate there might be a gun inside and you need to be careful where you are leaving it. Moreover, if in the unlikely event it does get stolen, it isn't usable (i.e. take the bolt). Work on satisfying those criteria and you won't go far wrong.

Agreed Pedro- my plan above seems to meet that criteria. The only question is how secure a chain/cable I can use. I will try and find the strongest I can. Even a small plastic coated chain seems to be stronger than a cable......

Not familiar of the sizes of the boot area, but fitting a drawer system similar to the type fitted to range rovers might be more sypathetic to the style of vehicle

Have you considered a Blaser - I know what some will say - but I’ve recently seen a friends neat compact set up when broken down it’s a small case. Easier to secure smaller set up.

Can you get drawer systems for a BMW estate ? They do lockable ones which are another security measure. It’s in the boot, out of sight etc

Also There must be a clever aftermarket alarm system which notifies you via mobile data what is occurring with your car - ie the alarm goes off it sends you a notification.

Out of sight is your best security, leaving your car in decent areas, and don’t make it desirable to be broken into - no shooting stickers on the windows, no valuables left on show.

And taking working parts out is the main must, even if they load the car on a low loader - they don’t take a fully working gun with them - once again blaser bolt head is a very discreet item to remove and doesn’t stick out like a rifle bolt.

For the record I don’t own a Blaser I’m just impressed on the system for dedicated hunting rifle.

If it was a permanent shooting vehicle then yes I agree- but I need the boot for other uses- so will need anything I fit to be removable .

As has been said it's just reasonable steps as you don't plan or expect your car to be broken into but you take what would be considered reasonable just in case.

You could go to all the hassle of the best safe in the world welded to the chassis and then your whole car gets nicked either by a cloned key or just shoved and dragged into a low loader while you're stopped at the services for a poo.

What about something like this?
