Rare white 'stag' killed by police

At least that's the ever increasing deer population problem solved. If free ranging deer are now considered a hazard to humanity, we can all pack up and hand in our rifles. It would appear that our erstwhile police firearms teams will now be exterminating all deer outside of enclosed parks, as they constitute a lethal threat to the public? :-|

so how many vets local to Bootle happen to have a tranquilliser gun and in-date sedative darts on the shelf ready to go??

I’m pretty sure they require a special license so aren’t commonplace. I’m sure one of our resident vets could confirm @Buchan or @srvet ?
I know of two vets that have (or had) dart guns and my understanding is they are classed as Section 5 as they fire a noxious substance.. Chester Zoo would probably have been the closest one if they were prepared to attend. The trouble is that the darts are essentially pressurised syringes with a cover over the needle hole that is pushed back as the needle penetrates the skin which releases the pressure by injecting the drug. If the dart misses it absolutely must be found otherwise a passing kid that falls on the still pressurised needle may receive the dose intended for the animal. This has resulted in huge areas of land being excavated to ensure the dart has been removed from the environment. A bullet is much safer in most situations!

Getting a licence, even for a vet can be pot-luck. I failed. As srvet says, there is a huge issue if the needle is lost. The range is limited too, one needs to be within 20-50m depending on the colume of srugs used. The vidoe footage I've seen looked like a pretty wound up animal so I'm not sure how well darting would have worked.

My permission is near a zoo and speaking to the farmer they had an animal escape from the zoo and end up there, when the zoo staff came it took them plus the former to catch it and as it had broken a leg it was put down anyway...seems strange and going back 10 or so years

I read about this yesterday. I believe the RSPCA were called - their advice, which I think is quite correct, was just for everybody to back off, leave it be and it would quickly find its way out.

Instead major incident with no doubt lots flourescent yellow, flashing blue lights and i understand a number of police officers were injured trying to catch it.
But the RSPCA don’t have to consider what happens if this is done and in turn it decides to move at rush hour and then causes a serious/fatal road traffic collision or similar.

I can’t wrap my head around where it came from! There are no fallow anywhere near Liverpool, I have seen one or two Roe between Crosby and Formby. Perhaps an escapee from livestock haulage or a deer farm? Not even aware of a deer farm near me.

That don't sit right at all, they had it contained so stay out & wait for a vet. Give the animal the same respect we do for those that don't want to be called male or female, when they get distressed its a nations problem!
That local force could have used personel with torches while vehicles park accross roads to guide its direction.
Can tell you’ve not been to Bootle 😂

So a fallow buck dies after being shot?

Shock, horror, probe!

Journos milking a few column inches.

Nothing to see here, move along.

If memory serves me right, some time back you posted about how you were ejected from an airport for chinning armed cops for the way they carried their guns which in your opinion was unsafe.
Those same cops may have been in receipt of information and operating with an elevated threat level.
You didn't know. Same as the deer that was shot. You didn't know.
I reckon you simply don't like cops having guns.
Funny
Chinning people seems to be more your style than mine.

There is something wrong about this - a stag anywhere near Merseyside must have been an escapee probably from Knowsley Safari Park and that is miles away so little chance of 'walking home' .
What surprises me more was that it haden't been eaten before the police even saw it.
In a cold winter years ago, most of the trees around Speke ended up on domestic fires.

it wasnt a stag

How dare you ruin the sensationalism of the story!!! 🙄

It is a shame it had to be shot, but imagine the uproar if it ran into a road, caused a family car to crash killing a family….

I always cringe at the “you could tranquilliser dart it”…..does anyone have these mystical darts outside of Africa?

Regards,
Gixer
Hi darting is common most vets are probably licenced to do this . Seen loads done .
With no issues from stags to escaped bulls in the middle of towns .
Would have been a better outcome for the poor fallow. Waste of a good beast.
Police probably went OTT as norm

Usually if darted they can’t put them in the food chain I believe @Buchan may be able to confirm….and I’m not thinking it’s a standard thing to have around for the police.
