Firearms use in High Risk Areas

Deer Emergency received a call to my local refinery...roe doe down and in a bad way on an embankment next to a service road possibly a hit and run during the night. After all security checks were done went with site manager/security to check it out and confirmed that it was internally injured ,laying down and immobile, blood was coming out of it,s mouth. Now knowing that firearms are not allowed on the site Plan B was a captive bolt or a knife dispatch as she was quiet and did not move on approach.....head covered captive bolt used in base of skull..job done with immediate death as blink reflex confirmed.....the point is that any high risk site will require a rethink,if she was running with a broken leg and skitty the only option C was a tranquiliser dart gun (air powered) which we are buying in due course,so just a heads up for those who do HD and may be called out to sensitive sites. The refinery has an in house roe/muntjac population which obviously cannot be managed with firearms..only option would be a driven removal in selected areas to a temporary exit....not easy to say the least!

I'm curious you say no firearms permitted because it was inside a hazard zone and that you used a captive bolt gun. Is your captive bolt gun powered by compressed air or compressed gas cartridges?

Captive bolt uses .22 or.38 blanks...it is not a firearm.....22 used on this occasion
It may not be classed as a firearm but it still uses a cartridge that would be considered a potential source of ignition/explosion and wouldn't be permitted in high risk areas.
Perhaps the area that you are talking about is not in a high risk zone but still within the curtilage of the site which in its self is considered a risk site.

Semantics...if the Site Manager is happy so am I ...however as you surmised even a blank fired in a non flammable zone is an ignition source so it is knife ......I was Fire Officer for 22 years and I had many jobs in this refinery.

So was I (32 years plus 10 years consultancy work) that's why I was curious.
In that time I've had dealings with several high risk sites where the limitations of what can be taken or used on site are controlled to the extreme.

Hellraiser has certainly made a good point about what is best to do under similar circumstances where your options are limited. Some high risk sites that I've been on you can't even wear an electronic watch on site never mind into one of the high risk areas.
I suppose that even if they were successful in moving/driving all the deer out through a gateway left purposely open there would always be the risk of deer getting in again if a fence were breached by say a fallen tree or a gate accidentally left open.
