Covid Testing in Deer

A contact I have known for a long time who used to pick up foxes of myself and Robert Bucknell for testing rang some time back if I could collect samples with kits provided.
Yes send them up, but they were delayed so missed a chance of other samples with the end of season.
A young buck made an early appearance so I followed the check sheet which is quite simple but has to be done.
Biggest problem will be filling in the details on the tiny label. 🤫
My friend has Roe and I have muntjac all year round plus August will soon be here.

Remarkable coincidence.... a long standing customer asked just today if my Venison had been TB tested and he was quite serious.

Willowbank.
The thing is for quite a while I collected foxes for trichinella testing for the same agency
Trichinella testing wild boar is carried out for the food chain

There is always a number of well informed replies from trained persons (vets) when a TB thread/question is posted also lots of untrained replies.
The earliest written mentions of TB were in India (3,300 years ago) and China (2,300 years ago)

Should we discount a third type of test as one member says it is a waste of time with the other forms of testing an every day occurrence for the food industry.

The latest bird flu out break has had a huge impact on the shooting industry notwithstanding the free range domestic market, the results are from testing... is that a waste of time?
With out going down the foot and mouth road!!

Is there much difference with the TB in animals to the one found in humans? Can it be passed on or is it.

"Quite what this particular waste of time is supposed to contribute is anyone's guess"

What are the tests for TB in animals?
Fair point, perhaps my response was too short. If they are looking specifically for SARs-CoV-2, that's perhaps understandable as it's been found in white-tailed deer. And if'd I'd been more observant, I'd have seen the APHA logo!

I was disappointed in your response but I am sure you are not one of the sheep just one who might treat them.

Fair play to you. :tiphat:

Sent the first test off today which could have included a Roe buck from last night but my friend said
"lets wait for the old one going back " so tipped him our caps

I feel sure the A&P agency would not be requesting such info if they did not have there reasons! Maybe there is a whiff of smoke around ! lets hope not . :tiphat:

I'm not convinced that those silly little blue masks will be any more useful on deer than they have been with people, presuming of course that you can persuade the deer to wear them!

Coronaviruses in their myriad forms have been present in UK fauna since the dawn of time. Quite what this particular waste of time is supposed to contribute is anyone's guess . . . . .
