Friday Contemplation - Ideal short barreled forrest deer rifle and calibre?

Correct! I have always opined that the Grendel would be the ideal UK hunting cartridge. I have killed large (mule) deer with mine and they went down like hit by something sporting a much larger case. Accuracy is outstanding.
CZ Grendels are a bit of a challenge to find but rebarreling a 7.62x39 model would work. Or getting a Ruger or a Howa? ~Muir
What sort of speed are you getting in a Grendel? And I’m assuming 143gr eldx?

Actually I'm using a 120 grain Sierra Pro Hunter -the same bullet I use in my Creedmoor. I have never shot bullets heavier than 130 grain from my Grendels. Those @ 2550 fps.

With the 120's I am getting ten-shot averages of 2685 fps without hitting maximum, and superlative accuracy. The speed surprised me. I have repeated the test a few times and gotten the same results though the powder manufacturer states that 2650 is the max speed, and that with a grain more powder. I know of people that claim to rock 2700 fps with the same weight bullet but I don't see the need. ~Muir

Something short in 7.62x39? A CZ 527 or perhaps this - Ruger Ranch Rifle Tan 7.62x39 Rifle | New Guns for Sale | guntrader

I have a Ruger, bought one for my girlfriend, three of my close shooting buddies have them as well, and I convinced a coworker to get one. No complaints. Must be a good rifle as they are hard to come by these days. It is truly the 22LR of the CF line up. (Here at least) I just bought a case of excellent Barnaul ammo for $160 US. Shoots like this at 32-cents a round. My girl friend shot this five-round group over her back pack at 100 yards with her Ruger American. ~Muir

Short you say, handy you say? Scout mounted and between the counterbored muzzle and the very short barrel the chamber is nearly as long as the rifle! So here you go - the Russian boomstick - and as a bonus the folding bayonet is always there for backup should you pull the shot or perhaps get really, really close in cover.
You are welcome!
