6.5x55 or 6.5 creedmoor

I have been reading the good responses in the 308 vs 6.5cm post and some of the responses mention the 6.5x55, so which would be better for deer stalking. I have read that the 6.5x55 holds more propellant but the 6.5cm runs at a higher pressure, the swede is more powerful etc. Is it just a case of which i could get a good supply of ammunition for. Could someone point me in the right direction please. What barrel length in both ?Thanks you

Yes.

The performance with good factory ammo is essentially the same, while the 6.5x55 offers a bit more case capacity for reloaders to play with.

The Scandinavian manufacturers will be producing quality 6.5x55 ammunition forever, so if they’re easily available at a reasonable price where you live, then no worries. In the US, there’s very little point in choosing the Swede.

They both work just fine out of a 20” barrel.

As much as I hate to say it, go for the 6.5CM. Unless you’re in Scandinavia, the 6.5CM has a better following.

Factory ammo is more readily available, and in a variety of flavours. Also, your resale value will most likely be better.

Go for a 24” barrel and 1:8 twist (I believe that’s the standard for them).

Unless you reload or like the nostalgia factor (both apply to me!), then the 6.5x55 will, in my opinion, be a poorer choice.

I have a Steyr SM 12SX in 6.5x55 and it’s a sweet rifle and load.
I have custom made 120gn ballistic tip ammo for it and it’s very sub moa accuracy.
It’s great on anything from munties upwards and causes far less damage than my 243.
It is also good at distance - far less loopy than a 308 when down at bisley and still pretty good in a crosswind.

Don’t tell my other rifles, but the Steyr is my favourite!!

6.5x55 all the way.

Nonetheless kudos to Hornady on a highly successful marketing campaign with the 6.5CM (6.5x49) and providing the current day validation of why 6.5 calibre rounds are so good.

If I was on SOCOM, I would be selecting the 6.5x47 Lapua…

I wonder IF a military is going with a new round, wouldn't they "design" their own, just so they won't have to pay royalties to Hornady or Lapua?

You may very well think that, but I believe the Zastava M19 "modular combat system" in one guise uses 6.5mm Grendel and is in service with the Serbian military.

Take 3 modern rifles that can withstand modern pressures. Make one in 6.5 CM, one in 6.5x55 and one in 6.5x47 or 260 rem. take the same bullet and same powder and load them all to the same pressure and no deer will ever know the difference.

The 55 is a longer case, so you can load more powder to get more velocity. But you can use a more progressive powder in a shorter case and get pretty much the same velocities.

Where the 6.5x55 probably wins is more case capacity to shoot heavy bullets at reasonable velocity. Same argument for 308 vs 30-06.

But with monolithics you don’t need bullet weight to get lots of penetration as a monolithic bullet just holds together.

So ………

Whichever you choose, make sure the barrel has a faster twist rate (8" or less rather than 8.6") to stabilize the longer lead free bullets.
