Boots for Achilles tendinitis problems

So, having had a bad ankle for almost a yr, found out it’s Achilles tendinitis 🤬
My Lowa boots, whilst a great boot, seem to really aggravate it, so I need to find a new brand.
Anyone else have this and found something as I don’t feel confident relying on google 🙄

The obvious question is do you need boots? Could you use a waterproof trainer and gaiters to reduce the pressure around the tendon? This is what my wife has done and seems to be working for her.

The added benefit is that now she's not wearing such a stiff supportive boot her ankle strength, mobility and balance is greatly improved too.

Fair point and I don’t know the answer.
I’ve been wearing my dealer boots for several months and they work well, obviously no good for this time of yr though.
Having worn boots for 40 yrs it seems alien wearing a trainer, but may well be the answer.
I’ve always liked the support boots give, crossing ditches and the like, and a lot of my ground is boggy, no idea how waterproof trainers and gaiters would actually be 🤷

Have you seen a specialist (private, not NHS) for a second opinion and consultation regarding footwear?

Specialty insoles can work wonders if they are applicable and very thick wool socks for extra cushioning.

Following this with interest as I am also suffering with this plus a suspected partially torn Achilles tendon. I’ve tried my douvre extremes but that’s a no go. Currently wearing an old falling apart pair of trainers when it’s dry & I’m on tracks but really I’m only comfortable in bare feet or Keen sandals, neither of which are suitable for an upland shoot with lots of boggy patches!

Some boots just seem to aggravate Achilles problems in one person and not in another. I would have thought a low cut boot would probably help however.

Yeah I’m learning a lot about it, upto a few weeks back I didn’t even realise it was a thing 🙄

Snapped my Achilles completely about 5 yrs ago …. One of biggest frights I’ve ever had as it goes with a bang !

Recovery was painful … Physio pushed me to poi to thought had to be detrimental … not ashamed to say had me in tears …..
End of a day it would be literally pulsing with waves of pain …. Ibuprofen then on my hand and knees in shower / bath with mixer tap play HOT water over it was a relief ….also hot and cold treatment in a chair with bucket of hot and bucket of cold water … 5 mins in each swap it back n forth .

Boot wise I work a pair of meindls high for beating and flanking up hill
And other pair is a pair of milsurp Haix which I rate highly also … rest of time I’m usually in a pair of either karrimor or Hoggs of fife cross type trainer and very comfortable …..

If you haven’t spoken to or paid for a specialist opinion. It’s worth every penny … maybe self refer for Physio get some exercises to build it up … might get them. Ow of year NHS websites …. They usually have conditions and relevant exercises you can start doing immediately .

Another thing that agggrevates it or doesn’t help …. Excess weight … not saying you are overweight at all but if you are maybe worth some walking to lose weight and work / build up ankle strength.
I’m still overweight but down 10kg and I notice it on joints for sure

Paul

Been there! Boots will not resolve your problem, a good physio/regime will.

Invest in time and effort to stretch and do exercises to alleviate the issue and you’ll be back in your usual boots before you know it.

I have exactly this problem and the solution was getting a pair of kenetrek orthopaedic boots. They are expensive but if you always wear them when on the hill and even dog walking ( throw out wellies!) your problem will subside! It takes some time though.

It’s a lot of money with the pound crashing but they are great boots and do work. I have two pairs!

I had the same problem, found taller boots to be a bastard so have been using Solomon 4d 3 gtx boots ,they are mid height and much more flexible than the usual leather boots. I'm on my 2nd pair but only as I ruined the 1st pair doing stuff I shouldn't have with them. Probs won't buy anything else tbh.
Just wear waterproof socks and gaiters and be as good as any high boot but much comfier

If you don't already use inserts then get yourself some good rubbery (non absorbant) plantar fasciatis shoe inserts as these are the game changer rather than the boot itself as they position that heel higher
I wear these in every shoe I have , feet would be aching without them.

Also , at home.. I use oofos flip flops/Cross and can't recommend them enough! Like heaven for your feet !

I have an awful ankle, wounds and failed fusion.
My Mendel boots are redundant and I wear military desert boots mostly ( can't get wellies on). The ones I have are goretex lined but I have three pairs so I can change when the first pair need washing and drying out.

Hi, I had similar problem few years back when I started hammering the mountain trips wearing meindal dovre extremes, tried all sorts of different lace positions which helped a bit then read up on the superfeet green insoles , think they were £30ish while back but noticed difference straight away, might be worth a punt

Ok, seems to be a theme developing here … boots on their own are not the answer.
I will seek some help with it when I return back and hope my Lowas will be good afterwards
Have been struggling with tendonopothy in both knees for the last year. Lowas definitely aggravated it in the first place, far too stiff in the sole.

10 months on, Custom insoles, a lot of money on physio and rehab classes and shock treatment to one knee after its recovery plateaued and its just about getting there.

See a specialist, the longer you leave it the longer and more expensive the recovery is likely to be!
