Tracking Leads - What do you use?

Just interested to learn what leads people use when tracking with their dogs. Looking to find one that’s easy to grip and not too heavy for the dog.

Another vote for biothane, strong, doesn't absorb moisture, easy to untangle, and wipes clean and its not much good for anything else so the dog knows the score when it come out.

Cheap harness and a length of big bale baler twine with a clip knotted in the end.
May move to 6mm GPO rope when dog is older.

I have a 5m length of 3/4” wide webbing in red. Bought it at a yacht chandlers. Stitched a loop at one end. Use a nigoloh tracking collar and the webbing is looped through the ring and she pulls it behind her when we are stalking. It’s silent and I can just step on it when she decides she is going to be headstrong. And its easy enough just to flick it up into my hand if I need more control.

Thanks for the responses so far. What’s the biothane like when it gets wet? Does it become hard to keep hold of…

Not in my experience. They use biothane for horse reins, so it's purposely designed to retain its grippiness when wet.

I use a biothane stalker's lead from @Specialist Gundog Leads when I take Sam (the monster dog) out stalking.

I also have one of their flurescent 10m tracking leads, which doubles as an ideal long line when puppy training.

I use two thin rolled leather tracking lines treated with a waterproofing wax, really light and my teckles don’t notice em when clipped on the harness, dry out very very easy

used other synthetic lines but these are the ones that work for me, I think it was carols leather who supplied mine

Nothing, the dog has been trained.
I would not trust my dog not to follow a deer over a busy road when following a deer running on. Drivers use the rural roads like race tracks where we shoot and dog has a very strong prey drive when she knows she is allowed to hunt them.

Biothane. Enjoy webbing ,para cord etc when you are tracking through gorse and brambles. Let’s face it deer rarely decide to to run and die in nice open ground.

Biothane is the way forward.

Here's my take on it. Nothing wrong with the plastic coated washing line type tracking lead 10 mtrs is sufficient. Train you dog to track at a easy slower speed then you don't have to hang on to the lead the whole time. Just let it trail on the ground saves trying to navigate around bushes. I would not pay more than a tenner for a tracking lead. Biothane leads and Niggeloh harnesses are for making you feel good not the dog.

Go to a horsey supplier and get a lunge line I think it’s called get them in different materials including leather Ive got the webbing one, kind on the hands doesn’t pick up too much debris and dries easily and not expensive.
