Evening,

What does the course entail?

Thanks

Aim

The Intermediate Deer Course is designed as a step between DSC1 and DSC2 and the aim is to advance and prepare students wishing to undertake the DSC2, and any novice stalker wishing to further their practical experience.
The course is designed to equip the candidate with the support, understanding and awareness required for the safe and correct way of shooting deer, retrieving, gralloching, carcase inspection and lardering. It allows everyone to be supervised on their first kill and provides practical experience in preparing the carcase for human consumption.
On completion of this course the candidate will be issued with the BASC Intermediate Deer Course certificate.
The BASC Intermediate Deer Course comprises of:-
  • Stalking the deer or shooting from a high seat.
  • Taking the shot and reaction to shot.
  • Approaching the deer/follow up.
  • Extracting and transporting the carcase.
  • Gralloching and inspection of the carcase.
Many thanks, Peter

This course has been running for years, if you fancy it then do it, if it’s not for you then scroll on by.

I was under the impression that the L2 course was to prove your knowledge gained over your experience of stalking and would expect it to have been gained over a period of time not just to attend a course.
Many years ago, not long after the Advanced Stalker Certificate was introduced, I had a person under my wing introducing him to Deer stalking.
After a few months and having taken just a few Roe Deer and still very green, unbeknown to me he attended the Avanced course.
He sat the exam and passed, purely based on what he had learnt from the course and of course the exam was based purely on what had been drummed in to them on the course.
He then proudly showed me his certificate but was still as green as grass when in the field.

Does the BASC make money (ie there is an element of profit ie. income is greater than expenditure) on this intermediate course ?
I think you will find its great value for the cost.

Of course there will be some element of profit, to cover administration, trainers, carcasses

Many thanks, Peter

How can this be called an intermediate course when it's aimed at a novice stalker shooting their first deer?

Because its between DSC1 and DSC2

Peter

That's a very simplistic answer. Are you suggesting it's a course for someone to shoot and process their first deer under supervision and for someone to do their final prep before a DSC2 witnessed stalk, with both candidates relieving the same award?

This looks as if it does fill some gaps in my experience after DSC1 I've done paid stalks that were a great learning experience but didn't fill all of the gaps in my practical experience. My first six roe used six rounds and provided six carcasses for the freezer, So far on my permission I've done a lot of walking one my own looking for roe and have had nothing for the freezer. £285 for two days training looks like good value so as soon as there's a course in Scotland or the north of England I'll be on it.

There are only four candidates allowed per course, which changes the maths a little.
I must say, observing from afar, that for someone who has never shot a deer, that £285, to have a go (guaranteed result, maybe not from a fair stalk, but presented in front of a high seat, is this really the deal ?) then be guided into what to do next with the knife etc., might seem like a proposition.

Other opportunities are also possible, although not with guaranteed results. As in guided stalks with someone like an AW, but these might need more work to discover.

The results are guaranteed aren't they ? And it comes with a certificate.

I dunno, I paid for my first outings with good people who taught me me loads more, usually half a day of 1 on one tuition, or a full day for morning and evening, plus more afterwards, butchery, cookery and more. Good company, great accommodation, grub included and a pretty good chance of a result, over 50% But even if no deer grassed, much learning nevertheless. For a lot less money, even corrected for nowadays rates.

Then subsequent invites to help out with management culls (I even got paid for this for my work in the larder), and so forth. Sure, not obvious commercial schemes such as these.

But this seems to be a straightforward offering that might suit some, who want a quick start without putting in the time and developing more rounded experience. But might lead onto more. And have the spare money to do so, about 1/3 £1000 Plus accommodation.

No disrespect. Is this course supported by DMQ?
Candidates for level 2 can ask any AW to undertake a stalk with them and advise them if they consider they have enough experience to continue to level 2 for a more reasonable cost.

This is not a DMQ qualification. They will be accompanied by an experienced AW or a DMQ assessor

I'm well aware it's not a DMQ course as There are to my knowledge only two. Level 1 and 2.
