So I started a thread as an open discussion about the decisions admin were taking on shutting down members rights to freely share their views within the reason of decency.

There were some interesting comments as well as the usual troll ones.

I have not posted back on this thread and just read the replies with interest.

Today without any discussion with myself as the OP or without and fair warning to the members following this thread to moderate their views, Admin have shut it down.

This is not the first time Admin have done this to a discussion without any warning. On top of this Admin have left threads running that have been frankly dangerous to public health (despite being asked specifically to shut them) I refer to ones during the Pandemic.

There is little doubt admin work hard, they own this site and manage it. That said I am sure that Admin don’t do this out if altruism and make money from this site. I don’t care that they do but a recognition that they do might be appropriate.

What is wrong is the lack of communication from admin to the members about a thread going wrong. At no time have I been contacted to say a thread I had started was being closed or I had a temporary ban due to something I had posted (this happened over dangerous claims by others about Covid vaccination, interestingly I was banned whilst those posting were not!) admin just unilaterally acted presumably in what they thought was their best interests as well as the sites.

As the PM is finding, at some point you will be asked difficult questions and either you answer them truthfully and openly or you don’t. Either way you cannot just shut them up because you don’t want to answer them.

I enjoy my time on SD however as with many things I think it can be improved and communication from Admin rather than the “teddies out of cot shut the thread” approach would be a step forward in my opinion.

I have little doubt I will now probably join woodsmoke for writing this.

BE with bringing this up time and again, and opening another thread, you seem to be coming across as if you are spoiling for a fight or a ban. This really isn't a fight to have, it's pointless.

Woodsmoke overstepped the mark and was justifiably given a rest. Blaming admin for someone's overt approach is not the right way of looking at it, neither is stirring the ****.

Getting admin to ask "do you mind awfully if we shut your thread down" ain't ever going to happen.

PS I don't have anything to do with running the site
 
We have 2 weeks til the doe season.

This is the time to direct energy towards
going out with the secateurs/pole pruner and clear brambles and branches from access routes and sightlines for high seats
checking high seats to make sure they're secure, no rot in legs/steps etc
topping up on ammunition
checking zero
sharpening spare knives
topping up first aid kits
charging up head torches
mending stuff
brushing up on lymph nodes and diseases
etc..........................................

There's plenty to do. I think @sikamalc should ban all of us who reply to this post for 2 weeks to make sure we get on with the job in hand and stay On Topic!

I completely agree if you are abused like that then without doubt you should ban them for ever. No one should put up with that behaviour. This site does have its Trolls, some of which I have no doubt will be along in a minute.

I’m not sure why the previous thread was stopped as it neither insulted you as a person or was causing trouble. If you felt it was heading that way then a reminder to keep on track rather than the shut down may have been better.

I am posting these things to show you how a heavy handed approach may at times be counter productive and indeed stir up insults and trouble. Timely communication is always the key.

I agree I could leave the site as you could step down as Admin if it is becoming too onerous. We both have a choice. Neither I’m sure will happen.

This site has deteriorated over the last 10 years with more abusive trolls and those not willing to stop, look, listen, think and consider their point of view might be extreme or even wrong. That said it still fills a purpose and at times can be a great resource.

IMHO it could be better.

I along with my two colleagues own the bloody site.
We bought it some 15 years ago with less than 700 members. It was our risk and our money.
Quite often we have people joining who we do not want on the site. Sometimes they try to return and get banned again.

As I have said before it's our decision to act, we do not do it lightly and it's always in the best interest of the members and the site.
Despite some acting like children on here and not grown men.
