What breed of gun dog and why

Hi all,

My lovely little cocker is now retired and slowly slowing up.
I’ve always had spaniels in the family and I love them dearly. This time round I won’t have much time to train the dog and I’m wondering what other breeds to go for.
It will mainly be a pet but I like to have a companion in the field. Mainly rough shooting and a bit of beating.
I have been thinking of a visla or maybe a pointer.

What’s your favourite breed and why?

Good morning,

If you have less time to train then a pointer may be the wrong route.

Mine is both quick to learn but hard to get her to do anything she is not keen on. Also very strong willed with big prey drive . She is a wonderful dog but all of the above makes her slower to train than the springers I had in the past and requires a fair bit more exercise. She is a GWP but similar traits to my friends GSP.

Personally for a family pet with a bit of training I would stick to a cocker, I have both cockers and labs, and the former I would never be without, something about their nature is just unbeatable.
Doubt you’ll get away with pointers without the requisite training and energy expenditure to be honest

We have just gone back to cockers , I miss a dog in the my pigeon hide and with my blown knee this little bugger will save me the trouble of hobbling about picking up 😁

Had springers and found them hard work at times in the field over the years , but cockers always found them very very biddable , loyal and of course totally nuts .

Picked this little monkey up yesterday morning . 11 weeks old

And after 2 hrs of sussing me out , it’s turns out That my new Dad is OK .

I had heard they can be a bit head strong.

We will keep taking advice and try to see a few different breed’s before we make any decisions.

Being honest our Ella actually chose us.
There was a litter of 9 and she was the only one that stopped playing and came over to me, got on my lap and wanted to see us.
Happened to also be the only bitch available in the litter.

Having had a lab after always having spaniels. I have admit I’m missing the spaniel size. My dog lives inside and the size difference is significant over a cocker.

And the lab is just a crazy at times.

Got a Golden Retriever after always having Springers around. Christ he's a bloody giant. Also thinks he's a cat and sits/lays on you. He's 40kg. Wife's choice. He's bloody lovely though

Got a cocker who makes me laugh every day. Like him so much I would like a pup from him. This time I won’t mess up the training though.

Japso the 5yr old Russell X Apso brilliant ratter and yard alarm easily fed (slipper size 9 incl in picture for scale 🤣).
