Anyone stalk with a full stock / stutzen?

Well this is the latest new gun itch that I’m trying to ride out,(always fancied one).

In my head they’re noisy and look daft with a bipod.

On the other side, they look great, you can detach a bipod on and off,(particularly a Spartan) and you tend to only fire a shot or so on a day on the hill.


What’s the verdict? Keep telling myself it would be a daft purchase but interested in what folk on here think?

Go for it! But in a calibre and chambering which works with a short barrel, ie. Don’t get a 7x57, 6.5, 30-06, 7mm RM etc

I’d go 8x57 all day long!

Sorry to contradict triggertrix but my CZ 550 in .30-06 shoots well. It took a few moufflon and roes females in Europe and a few plains game in South Africa.

Currently using two stutzen CZ 550's in 9.3x62 and 7x64 mainly for driven as well as a CZ 452 stutzen in .22LR for bunnies and practice. Also got a Krico stutzen in 5.6x57 which I'm looking forward to using on roe in Scotland at some stage. All a bit Euro, retro, odd calibreish choices but they suit me.

I've been using a Steyr-Mannlicher Classic in 7mm-08 (so shorter acttion) for a decade. No bipod and no moderator obviously. It handles absolutely beautifully, and the first shot from a cold barrel is always accurate. Admittedly it doesn't like strings of shots much, 3 is about as many as you can get away with. But then I generally don't need anymore than one when stalking. I will hopefully take it out after CWD next month, using the reloads with Fox bullets I've developed quite recently. I say go for it! But it's not a range gun. And Philistines will mutter....

Find yourself a really good old Mannlicher Schoeneur in 6.5x54. If you can find one with a scope mount even better, but nothing wrong with old iron sights.

No you can’t but on a Bipod, Moderator, a 34mm tubed scope, or all the other crap most seem to need.

Just pick it up, a knife and a pair of binoculars and go hunting. They are light enough that you can just shoot a deer. And no you don’t need scaffolding poles to assemble a shooting stand before you take a shot.

Lord I was hoping for 20 replies saying it’s a daft purchase,(well my wallet was).

What make is ‘best’? I thought it was between CZ and Steyr mannlicher but I forgot about sauer.

I was thinking .30-06 as I’ve a .222, .270 and use of a 6.5x55. Ideally something factory as I reload but sometimes it’s handy to grab something at short notice. 243 really doesn’t float my boat and I can’t say why!

Will the stock take a bipod though? I use sticks as well but if a qd stud or the Spartan adaptor was fitted , ( the latter would probably suit me more as you can just attach when needed) I’d be tempted.

It rather depends on how the rifle is bedded but if you’re going to use the Spartan my suggestion is to install the adapter further back from the existing sling swivel so the pressure applied to stock is more central. But experiment with position before doing any drilling/milling/letting-in as such a position may not work for your rifle hold when prone.

Nothing at all ‘daft‘ about it. Firstly it’s a good choice & secondly if it gives you pleasure then go for it.
