Best fuel efficient cars or SUV/truck for Stalkers

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that fuel efficiency means nothing without reliability.
If your air suspension, electronics, timing chain, water or fuel pump goes, that's going to cost the equivalent of a lot of fuel.

Aside from normal consumables, my Landcruiser has had none of the above, or any other major issues in 19 years and 249k miles.
It does around 29-31 MPG but I think I've had relatively cheap motoring overall.

Not new but I run a 59 plate Dodge Nitro2.8 4cyl 6spd selective 4wd and achieve high 40's local and into over 50mpg pity they do not make them anymore never missed a beat.Parts good cam belt kit with waterpump £110 serpentine belt £25.

I really wish someone would bring out a small pickup in the vein of the old Subaru's.

We spotted a Renault (Dacia) Duster pickup when on holiday in Cape Verde. I asked my local dealer about the chances of it being introduced here and he said it wouldn't sell🤷
The little Scooby pick up didnt sell well new , it sold mega once well used though . Mainly it was the importers where rubbish likewise Isuzu at the time . Did you know the trooper didnt sell against the early disco and Shogun ? Right up until the importer raised the price massively and put them in nice showrooms. It was way ahead of the competition of the day

Depreciation and maintenance are the most expensive bit of vehicle ownership . Try and tell a buyer that though when they are doing under 8k a year and your talking rubbish . True though even with todays fuel price . Your 20% just in vat at the get go , then all the dealers margin and dont forget the dealer services to keep the warranty up.

Very true.

Found buying 18 months old and very low mileage is the sweet spot.

But that is for decent German and Japanese cars

Jap cars are great ! Well right up until the point spares are no longer main dealership items , then the prices are horrendous . Best car i ever had was a Scooby very nearly did 300, 000 miles before i had to give it up just on the basis of some parts being either unavailable or totally crazy money . German ? owned just one with my own money , the Golf ( company lease cars dont count ! BMW, Merc, especially Audi driven them bought them and sold them ( wife used to get company Audi after Audi both hated them ) not impressed! Always fancied the old G waggon but other than that none worth the money , not that many actually purchase them with a bacs or cheque

Anyone used a BMW X3 for this sort of thing? On paper it looks like it’d tick a lot of boxes.

Similarly a Q 5 Could be used , though despite our one (sq5) being “scattered with the trappings of equine acoutriments” I doubt I would be well recieved if I were to put a couple of hinds in it ,,,😂

Once had three hinds in a co stalkers wife’s car - (Whixh we were using at the time on a joint outing) glad I was able to leave ns close their door when the car got home beating a hasty retreat ,,,,,,,

Still makes me smile and wince at the same time - sadly no longer with us

Even though i hate trailers, there is something to be said for them if you have a " clean car" used by your other half . I always need a dog / work truck anyhow

Hello,

With the rising cost and fuel I'm wondering if there are any clever ideas of cars or SUV's suitable for stalking in places like Scotland and Ireland but with decent MPG etc.

The obvious choice is something like a Toyota Hilux or VW Amarok but the MPG is not great at 28mpg more or less.

Would something like the Toyota Rav4 hybrid be ok for forestry stalking in places like county kerry, ireland?

Basically something reliable with decent MPG and ground clearance/offroad ability suitable for Ireland and Scotland forestry roads etc.

Thanks,
Tom
Tyre wear might be another consideration.
I have heard that the Audi Qs are a bit heavy on tyres.

I was on the launch of the new Q5s instrument panel in a new built factory out in the boonys 70km from Puebla in Mexico and the Audi engineers there told me they expected it to take up to 10 years for the quality to get up to the old outrunning model from Ingolstadt, that was back in 2016.

Isuzu dmax steady 34mpg goes any where, big rear bed tows 3500 breaker trailer, ideal for shooting.

If you don’t want a pick up and/or a trailer, you could use one of these.
I use one and find it great. keeps the smells and bitey things out.

I've regularly transported a couple of deer carcasses in a roof box as the kids wouldn't get into it and preferred to remain in the car 😉

I have a 2.4 Mk8 Automatic Hilux.

Current diesel pricing circa 165pence per litre puts it at costing roughly £1 of fuel to drive 3 miles.

Main dealer service £349 per year ( includes Toyota relax enhanced warranty up to 10 years old and/or 100k miles)

Reliability is excellent though, I’ve had it for 7 years and apart from consumables the only thing it’s needed were 2 glow plugs which were replaced under warranty.
