Best fuel efficient cars or SUV/truck for Stalkers

Kia Sportage 2.crdi awd 47 mpg Town, 54mpg motorway .
Lockable diff ,4wd air intake on top ,have forded 3ft floods.
Great on snow/ offroad with the right tyres.
Had 3x fallow and a Roe in the back .
Tows a 23ft caravan like there's nothing there. Cheap to service yourself and so many how to video on u tube.

I must agee, had a Octavia scout, one of the best cars I’ve had. Great mpg, massive boot ( bigger than my Touareg) and got me everywhere I wanted to go in it. Touareg gives my 36-38mpg on the motor way and average 28-29 with country driving in the hills on AT tyres. It is very capable with 2 locking differentials and low range ( escape edition) and keeps up with hilux etc off road when I have taken it.
I was told I could only have a smaller 4x4 than the Volvo XC90 that preceded it…. The Touareg has a smaller boot than the Volvo but much better rear leg room…. An important point for my two son who will be big lads ( ages 11 and 9 and in 13/14 clothes, both taking an adult 8.5 shoe)

Also the Escape model comes with all the plating underneath ( I’ve seen it all underneath applying some wax oil) which will make it less likely to get branches stuck under there which was common for the Volvo…. My mechanic got fed up with fetching bits out of the underneath……

We have a 2013 2.0l AWD with general grabber at3 tyres on it. I get around 35mpg on those tyres though. Absolutely brilliant and you are right, the fording capabilities are top notch. We get a fair bit of flooding down here and it sails through stuff that's quite blimmin' deep. 800mm is the official wading depth, which is right up there with some of the "proper" trucks etc.

smaller engines dont always mean better mpg. It has to lug the same vehicle around and usually as to work harder to do that
My point was that if you’re looking for an economical option then pickups don’t achieve that. They’re all much of a muchness with the usual caveats of which tyres you fit, driving style, amount of towing, auto vs manual etc.

Unless you get a dacia pickup!

Searched for a panda pickup but couldn't find one sorry...

There was a Duster pickup with the previous model, but it wasn't imported into the UK. Hopefully this one will be

My Mitsubishi Outlander is a plug in hybrid and at home around town 160 to the gallon. On a run 45-50. The hatch opens to provide relief from rain and is not affected too much by wind. with the back seats down I have room for 2 plasterers baths or 1 and all my gear. Tax free as before April 2017 and can use in London for free (at the moment). Pulls the trailer with my quad effortlessly. 4 wheel drive and with cross climate tyres, both sticks to the road quietly and still works off road. Ground clearance is not too good but that's why I use a quad!

I've got a Duster van - essentially the 4x4 but with the rear seats removed and a load tray fitted. Holds the dog box, rifle, carcasses and all other assorted crap nicely, goes anywhere I need it to and returns 45mpg (would be more if I was a bit lighter with my right foot).

It's a pretty good compromise vehicle - only downsides are it's not a proper mud plugger (ground clearance is surprisingly good but would stop it eventually) and it's plasticky inside.

Is that the one with terrible range ? Think it’s the same as a mates, sure it’s only about 30 odd mile from it, other than that he is quite pleased and says it tows the horse box really well at weekends.

I often think that should my circumstances change and I need to travel more I would assess going down the 2 car route. I currently run a 3L hilux auto and it is obviously a thirsty girl!!! (But fantastic as a chap who stalks a lot/runs a syndicate shoot). That being said I do circa 10k a year so I just put up with it.

If I had to move further I’d debate selling the hilux and getting a run around golf/Passat etc and maybe a Jimny with a small ifor trailer for my quad and bigger beasties. To my mind this is better than a ‘Jack of all trades’ car, that isn’t super economical, nor especially good to extract large smelly, ticky deer. Food for thought.

It is limited on range for just the battery alone but it is where the 160 MPG comes from. All around town is electric. hardly use fuel. to the point the car will stop using electric and make you use fuel to stop the fuel in the tank getting stale.

Mine does 31mpg, dropping to just under 30mpg if the roof tent is on top, or under 27mpg if towing a loaded trailer. (And when I say loaded, I mean up to the max 3.5 tonnes or above).
Don't forget if you go over the 3.5 Tonne limit you need a tachograph. That is potential to load over 3.5. Meaning if your trailer is plated above, you will get a ticket even if you are loaded with straw. Seems the ministry in Kent are trying to raise cash testing fuel and trailer weights.

I really wish someone would bring out a small pickup in the vein of the old Subaru's.

We spotted a Renault (Dacia) Duster pickup when on holiday in Cape Verde. I asked my local dealer about the chances of it being introduced here and he said it wouldn't sell🤷
Wrong colour scheme, possibly, but these are the idea, I’m not sure whether they are still being imported, but I’ve seen a few (this shown is more of ‘an odd one’) around.

I have a mild hybrid Subaru Forester, awd, it is very much a go anywhere vehicle and have had protective plates fitted underneath it even although it has very good ground clearance anyway. You get very little distance on the electric however it is still good to get you silently very near to where you are going. I get about 35 to the gallon but could get more if I drive it more sensibly. You could easily get several roe in the boot and even more if you put the back seats down.
The Outback shares the same floorpan and hence ground clearance as the Forester, has a cavernous boot space, is great on longer journeys (comfortable and improved economy), but the fuel consumption is not sparkling.

I’m impressed with the Skoda Karoq diesel 4x4 that lady Ff now has, very capable and would be spacious aplenty when rear seats folded down. A fair bit more speedy than a decent used Outback though, the savings on which can be used on fuel, which all cars use.
Decent suitable tyres make for good capability offroad, for all drivers of vehicles so inclined.

Love my Jeep Renegade with a Roof Top tent. Good for around 48mpg with tent..cheap tax too.
