Feo Phone call out of blue..

Unless the forum admins have given all the membership databases out to the police, they are not going te have much chance of matching up even the most 'outspoken' on here (and other forums) to licence holders ID's.

The police monitor all the Shooting Forums, including this one.
With PigeonWatch Zapp seeming to boast about his links to security agencies, people should be wary of posting anything controversial on there, especially if you are married into a Russian family.

Strangely enough or apposite, I watched a programme last night on OSD? and their Pegasus spyware programme - very interesting, who and what could be done without your knowledge. The programme even suggested that the ruler of Dubai (I think) wanted to trace his sister who was a very outspoken critic of his - suggesting no-one should trust him. She made a break for the west and her phone was hacked by this spyware and she was tracked and intercepted (it is suggested) before she could 'escape' by a snatch squad.
Also Macron had his phone hacked and almost all the french leading government ministers with him, by the leader of Morocco, at a time when awkward politics were emerging between the two nations.
Benjamin Netanyahu was suggested as the prime mover in giving hostile governments the software as a 'trade' for something he wanted from them.

The Police would be unwise to stray beyond the bounds of 'acceptability' and 'accountability' when gathering peoples data but if that is the only way to find 'wrong-uns' before any harm is done then I, for one, will not complain.

The bottom line is … We’ve got to keep our house in order..or else it’ll go down the handgun way..
I certainly don’t want to do or be seen to be encouraging or partaking in any form of unacceptable/shady comoments !
The police do and it’s been well documented do get it wrong on occasions. but on the whole we still have a just system.

February 2023 guidance

Social media checks
2.48 Chief officers should consider conducting an open-source check of the applicant’s social media presence and activity. The purpose of this is to establish whether the applicant is openly and repeatedly expressing views, or sympathising with views, which may suggest that their access to firearms would be inappropriate or unsafe. Police forces must respect the individual’s right to freedom of speech, but if there is any indication of a possible propensity to violence, illegality or emotional volatility, these should be considered by the police when considering whether the applicant is fit to hold a firearms certificate.
2.49 This check is intended to identify those who set out such views on open-source social media, and it may not capture those who are posting on social media more covertly, whether anonymously or under a pseudonym or on closed sites. Where there is a suspicion, through force intelligence or other sources for example, of such conduct online, chief officers should consider whether it is appropriate to conduct a more thorough investigation of the applicant’s online activity.
2.50 If a more in-depth investigation into an applicant’s social media activity is required which looks behind privacy settings, this could amount to activity regulated by the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, Investigatory Powers (Scotland) Act

Just and update…after the meeting with the feo from the Met..a mate whose cert was also expiring at the same time as mine..
He wanted a variation and was very reluctant to go ahead despite of what’s been happening.
Upshot.. I gave him the contact details of the very same feo and guess what he had his variation approved and in his hand in just over 2 weeks!
So a well deserved credit to the Met.

Not only will police monitor forums..inc’ this one….a lot of police, firearms licensing officers etc also shoot and are members of this site.
I despair sometimes when members rudely criticise police/FLOs on here…it doesn’t do us any good.

Not for me as he has zapped me twice so AFAIC he can put it into the suns no shine area.

Police Scotland now write to you about your renewal. FEO then gives you a call and asks you to fill in paper work, pay the fee and get doctors certificates.

Drop him an email once these are done. He then arranged a visit where he went through everything. Clearly knows his stuff and all pretty straightforward.

I’ve found all of my in person, by phone and text/ email comms with Police Scotland to have been excellent. Have read some poor stories on here with other forces but can’t say that’s been my experience at all.
Did I mention I’ve a variation in at the moment 😁
Honestly, local and national have been excellent.

Oh dear .. just this morning got a couple of letters in the post from the Met!
They have extended my original certs for additional 8 weeks just in case mine aren’t processed in time.
Still could be verse!

and how on earth do they know whose accounts/usernames link to their FAC holders unless people actually say 'yes' I'm on XYZ social media, and here are my details! which, would be dumb because if their account is hacked and anti's start posting things which catch the attention of the police, the certificate holder is going to get the knock on the door late at night for no reason,,they might not even be aware their account was hacked.

in fact, the mere thought of that happening makes me want to close this account...

we are getting to the point where having any social media is risky for us, begs the question, is it 'worth it'.

so many questions!
