There is a very pretty Sauer Stutzen coming up in the March Holts Auction…
I won’t be bidding Ive joined the farce that is renewals at present…so check it out though it looks an absolute belter![]()
I love my Mannlicher M72 in .270. Its light & handles great But it is noisy and when I'm with anyone I'm conscious of deafening them. Im therefore going to be trading it in for something more practical.Well this is the latest new gun itch that I’m trying to ride out,(always fancied one).
In my head they’re noisy and look daft with a bipod.
On the other side, they look great, you can detach a bipod on and off,(particularly a Spartan) and you tend to only fire a shot or so on a day on the hill.
What’s the verdict? Keep telling myself it would be a daft purchase but interested in what folk on here think?
With any auction you just need ti take the buyers premium and VAT into account when placing a bid. You can still end up with some really well priced things.I won't bid at Holts, their buyer premium plus vat frankly takes the pee.
Southams 17.5% + VAT = 21p / £1 on hammer. With any auction you just need ti take the buyers premium and VAT into account when placing a bid. You can still end up with some really well priced things.
As for taking the **** - well auction houses are not doing it for the love of it. And as for VAT on the buyers premium, well that is a government imposed tax that is unavoidable.
That's true. It was a great opportunity to try out guns, become familiar with them, find out what you liked etc. And that's gone now. So personally I won't buy a gun from them again because I can't go to Holkham. But I can also understand they never made any serious money from me. Only problem is, from an individual punter perspective, there isn't any equivalent alternative to see and handle so many guns. It just doesn't exist. So you have to buy blind.Southams 17.5% + VAT = 21p / £1 on hammer.
Holts 25% + VAT = 30pee / £ hammer.
Thats without stupid on line premiums.
No more London viewings so would require a hell of a journey to view anything at Holts. So whilst they have the name, the bidder value / experience is frankly poor.
Couldn’t agree more - brute ugly, wouldn’t have one in the house myself, especially in .22lr. My friend has one, absolutely sick-inducing……I conducted an experiment this morning and it turns out stutzens are rubbish. Don't buy one.

As noted above - good guns at attractive prices (from the buyers point of view) do come up at auction. I’ve brought three excellent firearms (2 shotguns & a rifle) from Holts, the most recent was last year. I‘m careful though plus I don’t exceed my self imposed fairly low ceiling working on the principle that it I get it then I’ve got a good deal but it I don’t then there’s another ‘temptation’ coming along soon. With any auction you just need ti take the buyers premium and VAT into account when placing a bid. Well no one location is going to suit everyone is it? That said - somewhere a bit more central than Sandringham would have been good but I can appreciate the benefits of working fully from company HQ & not having to transport so many firearms about.Southams 17.5% + VAT = 21p / £1 on hammer.

i used a BSA CF2 Stutzen in 30/06 and loved it for in the woods and high seats, great off the sticks but not a hill/mountain rifle. The old Sako stutzen is a two piece stock bbrilliantWell this is the latest new gun itch that I’m trying to ride out,(always fancied one).

What was the barrel length?I had a bsa stutzen years ago in .308 it kicked like horse shot what seemed like a 2 foot flame out the barrel and deafened you every time you pulled the trigger, i loved that gun
