Good quality trousers

Hi all, looking to hear about people's experiences with the myriad of trousers available on the market at the moment. What do you think is 'ideal' for stalking. In my mind, something lightweight, keeps you dry when sat/kneeling/crawling through wet grass etc.

Don't want to spend a fortune but happy to hear recommendations on what you've used.

Hmmm...did someone mention the holy grail. In my experience, you can have waterproof, or breathable but not both. Even expensive goretex will let in water if you kneel/sit on wet ground. I prefer a decent set of tweed plus fours and a change of clothing....

I have been around the block with this one. When things startEd to get serious I bought Deerhunter wore them for many years and to be fair seams never came apart buttons never broke, but as time goes on you here of other makes that I shan’t mention (we don’t want the keypad warriors out) any way I am back with Deerhunter , i find them a very good fit and very comfortable and bits don’t fall off. I shall say for water proof I don’t think there is anything unless you wear those old oil skins , but hey that’s just my experience good luck 👍🏻

I never really solved "the great trouser problem" I've had most things including the Harkila Prohunter X as they got a good name. In the end all of them left me damp on the inside with sweat and condensation and that didn't dry all day. On really cold days I still wear heavy trousers, and those are mostly waterproof just by the nature of what I own, but for most of the year now and no matter the weather I've gone back to a fairly lightweight pair of army surplus trousers. I do get wet in them, but I also soon get dry again and that wasn't a feature of the waterproof trousers I've owned. I tend to destroy a pair of trousers in about a fortnight, the Prohunters were the exception as they were very heavyweight and robust but they still leaked after a little while, so if I kill the army surplus stuff then i don't mind.

In your position I'd at least give a pair of quick drying, lightweight, trousers a try as they may prove more comfortable for you in the long term than a pair of waterproof trousers. I'm going to suggest that if you are going to be out for an hour or two then it doesn't much matter and the waterproof trousers might be the better option but if you are going to be out all day and maybe 5 - 6 days a week then the quick drying but non-waterproof solution seems to be much better.

Rohan Bags for summer/dry conditions. Can obviously be worn with merino wool base layer in the colder months. Harkila Pro Hunters when it’s inclement.

Shooterking gear is highly recommended.

Great value for money.

Keep clear of Harkila.

Used to think they were good, but have found out that the hard way that their gear is not at all up to their waterproof claims.

This may seem very off piste but have a look at Genius gardening trousers. I looked at some at Hampton Court flower show and thought they could make v good stalking trousers. Very high spec and waterproof. V well designed. Company based near Cirencester.

Second that - switched to Swedteam a few years ago and really like their stuff.

Bushwear generally have a third off everything sale around bank holidays - Easter coming up so worth holding out.

I’ve 2 pairs of percussion, 1 lightweight summer pair, that somehow has stayed mainly dry, I don’t recall ant decent rainfall when wearing them. The winter pair is lined warm but does get damp on the knee and butt. I tend not to work hard in any case, so ymmv as they say.

Decathlon do a good range of sensible priced trousers with various ones being more or less waterproof than others.
I have two pairs of their cheaper cotton ones which are hard wearing enough and I wear full waterproofs over them if required.
I find the Unicorn trousers (warm, cool, fully waterpoof and non sweaty) just don’t really exist. I use the Decathlon ones with a ex Austrian Army pair of Goretex trousers if I’m high seating in wet weather. Layering is the key for me. Have a look at the Decathlon catalogue and reviews. Makes interesting reading.

Fjallraven Vida Pro all year round. For winter, I just make sure I keep them well waxed if it's damp in winter and it helps reduce wind chill too. You still get some damp through but I've never been soaked in them. Toughest trousers I've ever owned and very breathable. If they do get wet, they dry out quickly. I have the G1000 ones too but the Vida Pros are just better made and tougher, the G1000's are lighter and better for hotter weather. Getting pricy now though for what they are.

I like the seeland hawker shell trouser and more recently the key point reinforced trousers. not worn in the hotter months yet, but the last few months of wearing seem good, and compared to the price of some were a welcome purchase
