Stalking is not shooting deer from a high seat...discuss.

no but i supose you could argue the point that prior to climbing into your high seat you were stalking till you reached it.

+1 uncle buck, ive never used a high seat to shoot deer and never would however i did to shoot boar ! each to their own i suppose !!

Stalking is a generic term, your stalk is just that, what you make of it, under the terms dictated by nature, over the ground you are on, so all this pomposity around this or that, so what!, you shot it at first or last light, or at 50 yards or three hundred?:stir:

I agree with that because first and foremost the management or harvesting the deer is what matters. High seat or stalk to me means the same thing, out in the country side with the opportunity of taking a beast.

Cannot see what it matters really although I really enjoy a good walk.

For those that don't agree with the high seat approach, if you parked the motor and stepped through a gate 10' away, and looked down the hedge at deer would you not shoot them because you could lay down right there without any stalk at all?

quite often I will sit and wait under a bush on the edge of a wood for a muntie to cross ,is that not stalking either
unless you count stalking into a bush first of all
or I suppose you could summise that looking over a hedge and seeing a deer walking to you is not stalking either
but they all count towards your L2
as Steve says "stalking" is just a generic term

As the title says.

Wills
agreed, its just another manner of deer management, and what suits some, doesnt suit others, some continentals wouldnt dream of anything else, hence the reason i hear{ce grand approache} as in their hunts they simply cant achieve a good highland crawlllll.lmao.

If you have DSC1 you are only a trained Hunter, not stalker.... that comes with level 2 :)[/Q

You don't need any qualifications to be a stalker - were there no stalkers before DSC's ?

But back to the thread - I get much more statisfaction stalking into a deer than sitting waiting for them to come to me. Infact one of my proudest moments was when i stalked through very rough clearfell, into a Roe Doe, that was out of season, and got to within 25 metres of her. In the end she just wandered off unconcerned. i couldn't shoot, but that wasnt the point, it was my skill against her instincts. All you'd have to have done in high seat would have been not to rustle your sweet papers too loudly. Don't get me wrong, there are times for high seats, but I only like them when it's raining too hard

Spotting a deer then getting to a shootable position to take it is stalking. Anything else is luck or just waiting whether in a high seat, roe box or sitting on the edge of a prospective wood/ride.

I dissagree
anyone can spot a deer from a mile away then stalk to within 500 yards to a vantage point where as to take a steady shot
sitting on the edge of a wood waiting for a muntie to come out is not luck if you want consistent results
as you need to put yourself in the right place first of all to see one to shoot

i agree , the high seat is just another tool in the deer stalker /managers box as far as im concearned , i do use them but only when i have to !

in certain situations they are invaluble and essential , but i only sit in them when i have to , they craze me but to get the numbers some times i have to poke up and get on with it !

I declare for the side that thinks 'stalking' is a word meaning 'going out with a rifle to shoot deer'; but perhaps I'd imagine that the use of a high seat would include a bit of stalking through woods to get there.

Maybe if you just drive your motor to the high-seat, climb up, get your flask out an wait it is more accurately 'sitting up for deer', or something?

I've only ever stalked on the hill, so I've really no idea what you folks get up to in the woods.

A stalk is just a term IMHO wheather you go for a walk crawl or sit in a highseat, at the end of the day you still need decent fieldcraft to get you to the seat.I do both depending on the ground and other circumstances which dictate the method I use.
Our sport is stalking but without level2 I suppose we are just hunters, I don't personally need a title I am capable of filling my fridge but I know of dsc2 holders that couldn't fill a lunchbox, so who is the stalker ?

SO WHO IS THE STALKER.my humble opinion be,who ever apprecieates the beast, and enjoys the stalk,be it in a high seat a laborious long stalk,or even a quick dash to the grassie knoll to catch them as the make an exit,if your out there doin it and it works, each to there own, stalker is just a word?

+1 on that Big White Hunter. That's the most sense said on the forum in a while! To each their own and enjoy the privilege of being able to do what you enjoy.

Here we go another inflammatory thread. What exactly to you hope to achieve from a thread like this? other than to get people to bicker. why dont you go and flatten some deer in which ever way you see fit and SAFE. Because thats what high seats SHOULD be for, to improve the SAFTY of the shot.

+1 on BWH
