Locking wheel nuts 😡

Just a reminder to everyone, locking wheel nuts should be banned. I’ve never had an issue with them before however my XC90 has chewed up the tool after the garage has clearly used an air gun to put them back on.

I’ve got all wheels stuck on currently and need to get it sorted.

So my advice is replace locking nuts with normal bolts before you get in the position I’m in. Had this been out and about I’d be in a right pickle.

Did the drop link bar on the wifes motor just yesterday.
Stud threads on wheel nuts had previously been copperslipped - I also dip the key head itself into copperslip before removing AND when putting them back on.
Not that's any help to you right now...

Had something happen to me a few days I was due to go up to Arran stalking when the “locking“ valve caps I fitted (to thwart our local eco-warriors who were letting down 4x4 tyres in Bristol) caused a valve stem to shear. I simply could not find where the locking wheel nut socket was - I phoned the garage who did the last servicing and glad to report it was found. In the interim, I had tried a few of the suggestions above and none of them worked! My advice, take the OP’s advice and refit normal bolts before you find yourself in this situation!

Had this last week with one of our vans with a puncture stranded in Glasgow. Driver is no dafty and had full tool set onboard but couldn’t budge it. Tyre company had previously horsed them on. RAC couldn’t get them off either. Ended up getting a local garage out. Took all 4 off and replaced them with standards.

Have removed mine after a local garage mangled them and the bolts, had to get bolts replaced and put normal wheel nuts back on.

Lost my locking wheel nut socket a few months ago, young lad locally had them all off & replaced (I had the original bolts) in less than 30 minutes with a dedicated socket. Does anyone have wheels stolen these days 🤔 I know years ago you’d see cars left on 4 blocks with all the wheels gone but not seen or heard of it for a very long time.

Not sure if it's common, but at £150 a corner for a decent AT tyre I'm leaving my locking wheelnuts on!

First thing I did when I bought the wife’s car, is replaced the locking wheel nuts with standard, having had the problem of chewed nuts before🙈😂

If they want them that bad, they will take them anyway, lots of tools on Amazon to remove them quite easily.

Aye, same as everything; if they really want your car they will kick your door down and take your keys at knifepoint - it doesn't mean I'm going to leave my front door unlocked for them or the keys in the ignition.

Same as the guns in your cabinet. Why bother locking them up when if someone really wants them they will just cut it off the wall.

We could go on...

There a lot more car theft then home invasion thankfully, they know the police have very little time for car related thefts, just give you a crime number to pass to your insurance.

Home invasion tends to be on another level criminal. Guns have to be locked up for your license conditions, if you think a metal box and 6 rawl plugs are going to keep them from a career criminal you are mistaken. However it is good to slow them down by 10 mins.
