Long barrelled pistols

A few of us at one of my shooting clubs are thinking about dipping a tie into LBPs for some variety!

Anyone here shoot them and what’s the verdict? Does it seem like proper pistol shooting?

Any good recommendations on LBPs to go for?

Oh dear, I always read posts like this with great sympathy having had a few pals who were victims of the disgraceful and utterly politically driven knee-jerk ban.
We still have a thriving pistol club scene over here so you could always pop over to NI and try the real thing…..

Its similar but not the same…also there are some odd conditions around them.
You cant use someone elses.
There isnt a distinction in law between LBR/LBP and rifles but there is in FAC slots and attached conditions.

Love my LBP’s! I have a GSG 1911 that I bought new and tricked out with M9 engineering parts to be able to enter competitions - absolutely love shooting it and plinking - it’s such a stupid way to have to go to get round a rule on a technicality and anyone with half a brain knows that a criminal would be out with a saw/grinder in two mins and that it was just a way of pandering to the masses but don’t let that put you off - they are great fun.

Best of luck with your pistola!

Regards,
Gixer

I was a keen pistol shot back in the day . But the day before they had to be handed in was the last time I shot one .

Beyond going bang it’s/ there not the same no point in kidding yourself

Very sad time ,

Funny enough I found some pictures of some of my old pistols also one of my old ruger snub nosed .44 ( bit like a Saturday night special on steroids )

Anyway …….. think I will just leave it there . 😟

Have fun whatever you decide buddy .

The annual pistol event at Bisley was special, then practical pistol, service pistol A & B and police pistol. The ban had a significant impact on the industry and participation, that’s when primers were £10 a thousand and powder £10.50 a pot, cast your own bullets.

You can also get black powder pistols that are modified to use shotgun primers and nitro smokeless powder, these do not need to be LBP.
Couple of guys at our club have these Westlake conversions based on an Alpha .357 revolver. Production was halted due to some legal challenge, but there was a very recent court case which went the right way so I believe these are now back in production again.
They are a bit of a faff to load compared to a LB revolver but are effectively the real deal albeit at lowish velocities. IMO they look good and I am tempted myself. You won't get to pop off many rounds in an evening unless you have several cylinders and each one has to be on you FAC and they aren't exactly cheap to buy - good luck!

A and A gunsmith’s also do the conversion. Just another option for the OP to consider.

Thanks for the replies lads, appreciate it!

I’ve done proper pistols before in Poland (was awesome) and in the military so I’m semi familiar with it, just looking to get into it a bit without needing to buy a plane ticket each time!

Totally agree the pistol ban was ridiculous, politically motivated and achieved the square root of eff all.

Might be worth a dabble by the sounds of it, albeit I’m not going to be starting a collection up! Suspect it’ll be a one and done - might get a .357/.38 revolver so I can mix and match with a lever action for gallery rifle and still keep reloading and ammo costs sensible.

Thanks for the replies!

Well you learn something new every day..
I really enjoyed the Pistol "yy" events at Bisley.
I didn't realise it was only a GB ban and not UK wide.

Yessir - lots of big boys toys still here - I think the IoM and Channel Islands may also be unaffected!
A couple of my club members actually moved from London to NI just to keep their pistols. They are still here, still shooting…..

the Taurus .357/44 etc revolvers are not bad to shoot, if the arm thing is bent away from the arm they are a bit more pistol like.
Once in the aim they are just a long pistol.
I shot pistols pre ban and this is as close as I’ve found, however they don’t handle as well but when aiming and squeezing the trigger thru are quite good. Less snappy due to the extra mass.
For semi autos it is a bit more limited being .22 only. Not the same recoil but still fun especially at reacting targets. Bit boring on paper.
Just got myself a couple of black powder pistols myself as apart from the ball’s ache of loading they are actually pistols. And I like the authenticity.
Quite fancy a nitro conversion as they are a bit cleaner and some are quite modern in style.
Do it. Get one and when bored get rid. At least you will have had the fun of one.

I ended up speaking to my old pistolsmith a year or so back and the topic of long barrelled pistols came up during a collective outpouring of frustration at the ban. I am pretty sure (but not certain) that he spoke highly of the Alpha revolvers if I recall correctly as being good quality. I think he was using one himself with good results. His website is The Coach House | Gunsmith gun repairs, firearm repair, shotgun refurbishment and it may be worth having a chat about options as he had some stock in hand. If you have deep pockets then I see Korth do some LBPs that are lovely

I have a GSG 1911 and its alright. If I was buying again I'd got for the GSG firefly (Sig) over the 1911, i found it easier to reach everything with my thumb compared to the wider frame 1911
