Why cant farmers be honest

My mate was asked if he could help out with the foxes on a shoot.
Apparently it was hit really hard last year when the birds arrived .
So we said we would take it on as long as nobody else was shooting them as it is over an hours drive away.
The farmer assured us nobody else shot on the ground.
So last night we travelled up full of anticipation only to be greeted by another 2 guys who were already there set up
This could have been very dangerous as where we set up was where the others were expecting to see foxes.
As we set up a voice emerged from the darkness stating " I suppose you're here for the same reason as us"
After a brief conversation it turns out these 2 guys have shot the foxes since last year and also told us the someone else had shot 2 foxes last week
So we told them " Don't worry we wont be back"
Hope my mate tells the farmer to stick his foxes where the sun doesn't shine as what a waste of time and effort along with the safety aspect.
We stayed for a couple of hours and saw nothing, I wonder why

my conditions for foxing are,
only me on the land.
1) safety reasons
2) I'm not spending my time sorting out someone else's fcuk ups out
3)also some keepers have a few on to act as a poacher watch because they out all the time

Do you not ring or text the farmer/landowner to let them know you’re planning on going out, you know, for safety reasons.
Is it the farmers land or is he a tenant, if it’s a tenant farm it could be that the landowner has given the others permission and the farmer doesn’t know, or even the keeper if it’s not keepers by the farmer himself…

We did actually ring the landowner to tell him we were going out and he never mentioned anyone else was out.
We were told we were the only people shooting this ground but turns out at least 2 others do as well .....hence landowner not being honest.


No keepers on here , landowner runs the shoot .

I always clear a trip with the farmer, at least 2 days in advance.

If it’s a no then it’s a no, simple as that.

Perhaps you should tell the farmer what happened. He may of assumed the others had jacked it in as foxes are being seen and he hasn’t heard from the guys that did it last year! Even though they show up regularly he may not be in communication with them.

The others guys had spoke to the farmer that day but he still never thought to tell us when we phoned
If he had told us we wouldn't have wasted our time going...wont be going back.

I took on some ground that I was told another chap shot but hadn't been seen for ages. To save wasting time or causing upset I tracked down the chap before I went there only to find he had died two years before.

Think the safety aspect in all of this needs to be pressed home to said Farmer as there is potential for a life threatening accident .

An accident waiting to happen which will of course be blamed on the shooting community with more firearms restrictions. I wouldn't have taken the rifle out of the car in this case and just left texting the farmer that a breach of trust has resulted in unsafe shooting conditions.

Exactly this ..we had no idea anybody else was there , how could we possibly have known , even the farmer never told us.

If it is arable land with crops then there is a right to protect the crops, I have a big block local to me I shoot pigeons and foxes a couple of fields next to the block I shoot the pigeons as he rents it so I shoot the pigeons but not the foxes as it is not crop protection so he can't ask me to shoot the foxes. Far to much potential grief for a few foxes so a muntjac hide and ribs does the trick.
The same happened on one of their other farms as the tennet let 2 people shoot foxes but they turned up after the contract was over (September) with a different contractor taking over. I saw lights heard a C/Fire go off went home called the next day explaining what happened with Frank and Jessie James never seen again.

Few years ago I attended a lantra course over I think 2 days and 3 nights for fox control using firearms, bearing in mind
I’ve been after old Charlie boy for over 50 years, that course opened my eyes big time, some of the actual material, photo and statements where carrying the big shock factor, it covered everything from day through to a full night of fox control most with silhouetted foxes but it was hammered home about ranges, safety and some of the pics showed what can actually and did happen absolutely horrendous “ accidents “ people were killed because of negligence and unsafe practices
if your safety is compromised back in the truck and offskie without looking back, no chances, you owe it to yourself and any others - no compromise is no accident

Like a lot of wealthy and influential individuals it seems this farmer thinks it's fun to mess people around. If he runs a shoot presumably he holds at least a SGC. I'd report him to the local FEO or the Police. His attitude to firearms safety needs to be urgently reviewed.
