Boar on the East side of the Severn....

How wide is the Severn? It actually matters not a great deal as they are excellent swimmers and for very long distances too.

Rather narrow around Cinderford (certainly not 2 mile minimum). You can Google photos of the Severn Bore and see people surfing it - the river is fairly narrow when you get north of Slimbridge and I wouldn’t bet against them swimming across.

I have seen videos of the bore, not the place to be in a dinghy.

9 miles at widest, 2 miles at narrowest, the strong current / tides are the biggest factors. It has one of the largest high / low tides in the world.

A bit out with your measurements there. Upriver from Newnham it is only a few hundred yards across. They have spread westwards from the Forest of Dean by crossing the Wye into Monmouthshire, so I reckon they could have also gone eastwards across the Seven above Newnham especially at low tide. Keep yours eyes open folks.

You are right though about the rise and fall of the tide on the Severn, it‘s impressive and very quick. I go wildfowling on the Severn and when the tide turns to come in you would swear you were seeing water rush up hill. Not a time to be out on the mud flats.
