357 Magnum Handgun

Muir they are the most unbalanced awkward things that you will ever shoot. They don't sit in the hand like a proper pistol should, but we make the most of them as other than blackpowder pistols that's all we are trusted with (with one or two exceptions).

That sucks. They look like a nightmare for a die-hard handgunner. The long (12") barrel must play hell with accuracy as well. I bought a Springfield Armory XD Tactical 45 ACP this morning. I am not huge on automatics but at least it is light and pointable. (Not to mention ridiculously accurate!)

Now a question: Are you allowed to own black powder revolvers?? I am a real affectionado of black powder wheel guns and have spent a bit of time making them perform. I would tackle a whitetail at 25 yards with my Ruger Old Army without any qualms at all...~Muir

Hi Muir

They , ( Long Barrel Revolvers ) after the anger and dismay has subsided with loosing original sidearms are with practice great fun to shoot, ie falling plate, skittles and target etc

The brace with practice is a great aid to accuracy and again with practice can be drawn from a side break holster and shot suprisingly quickly...

Make do and get on with the tools we were left to play with or dont play atall

Sorry Terry I have to disagree with you on this one. I shot pistols both semis and revolvers with a fair bit of success competitively for probably 17 years even representing my country on a couple of occasions. To me long barrel revolvers are an abortion. Far from being an assistance the wrist brace is a hindrance. With that and the long tube (barrel) hanging out the front its a bit like balancing the pole a tight rope walker uses.

Now I know that you have previous experience of pistols from the forces though be it probably using an old clunker of a Hi-power, so you must feel the difference between these “wonder wands” and real pistols. While I can achieve reasonable accuracy with my LBR it’s not on a par with the results we used to achieve with real pistols and certainly not as much fun. But apart from black powder pistols which personally I dislike because of all the fuss and mess involved, it’s all we loyal subjects are trusted with. Now don’t get me started because over the years I have become more and more bitter about the loss of my sport!!!!

Try the new gsg 1911, it's the best pistol replacement yet, on the subject of humane dispatch, due to my occupation I am supposed to have one I asked if I could use my gsg the answer was no but we will give you a ticket for a section five gsg with a modified clip, crazy or what.

Good Lord! People actually put those long barreled guns in a holster? I'd think sling swivels would be more appropriate!;) That long barrel gets to me. The "brace" is alien to me but even without it, that barrel would have to go. When I shot 200M Metallic Silhouette competition with handgun the longest barrel I would use was 10" from my Contender single shot. I used a 6" barreled revolver for the 200M and 100M courses. I gave my son a S&W K-38 (38 Special) Target with an 8 3/8" barrel last year. I bought it in a package deal with a S&W Model 27, .357 magnum which has the same barrel length. He loves it but all I want to do is take a hacksaw to the last 2" of barrel! Because of the frame size of the Model 27 -it's built on the 44 Magnum frame- the long barrel doesn't seem too out of place and with hunting loads reaching 1500+ fps, there is no "barrel time" issue to degrade accuracy.

Eight By: Spoken like a steely-eyed handgunner. Get over my way and we'll spend a week going through my handguns at the range.~Muir

Taff: I have a GSG .22/1911. Love it....

Here's my Taurus long barrelled revolver in .44 mag

Silly looking and a bit unwieldy but fun to shoot and reasonably accurate with light target loads (6 gr of Unique)

Hi, i dont disagree with you...

Youll know the man that was once World Class B Champion i expect.... And a founder of Long Range Pistol shooting.... He tought me a great deal and was in the marines with my father.... His shop is in Christchurch
I had many pistols from .22 target to .357 686 and a good few 16 shot semi's

I accepted the loss as had no choice and made do with what was left until it no longer became making do and was a yet another challenge and a lot of fun..

As you say the loss of the sport remains a bitter subject for many

A friend not on here has just been granted a 357M or 38 Special by West Mids Police.
Does anyone know of any section 5 dealers in the West Mids area or near that can supply a suitable pistol or revolver. There are others i know of further afield but not any nearby.
Simon
I had the same problem trying to find a section 5 dealer who could actually get a .38 pistol let alone restricted
Personally if you hav a dealer that has them in stock further afield them I would go to them as it will save a lot of time and messing in the long run
I got mine from sabre defence by London
They even restricted it while I waited with no extra cost

Interesting! Does it not shoot better with faster loads?? That 6.0 Unique was a favorite of mine with 200 grain bullets in my 44 Special but in that gun you'd think the barrel time would kill you. You must be rock solid with an excellent instinct for follow-through.~Muir
