Another fall from a high seat in our Revier

We make holes in the ground 1.5 feet deep at the four corners then after treating the bottom of the legs with don't ask they go into plastic buckets which are filled with some fast drying cement and then gets the earth put back around the buckets and tamped down, this works well as a drainage and keeps moisture away from the feet plus they are locked into the ground and not just sitting on it when the wind blows hard.

Yeah, I have been over here too long now, I must be becoming a subliminal German even if they still refuse to give me their citizenship after more than 22 years of being here, which ****es me off big time. Hence my fresh push for Canadian citizenship from my fathers side.

I have the feeling that German hunters pride themselves with building the cheapest possible high seats. Race to the bottom which is part of the reason for accidents.

Although I would have thought most Germans have a better understanding of physics/engineering vs. those subject to the Scottish education system?

I have been living and working away from the UK almost my whole life as the car industry tanked back in the 1970s so I feel not very English anymore my parents were Northern Irish and Canadian but then not really any other country gets the patriotism trip from me either due to the corrosive politics being bandied about worldwide, its one planet and it really don't matter where you hang your hat.
But I am sure there are folks on here who think there is no better place than the UK and that's fine with me if they want to think that way too. We are all different in small ways.

Let's put it this way. Most Germans who endeavour to build their own high seats usually know how to use a hammer and a saw and have enough common sense to understand what's gonna hold together and what not.

And it's really not as bad as it may come over reading this thread. A well built Kanzel will last its 20 years easily. An annual check will reveal all that needs to be replaced, most commonly ladder spokes.

Every new short cut will have it's learning curve and possible hiccups.
I only been in a few High seats, they ranged from barely a roof over the head to the 2 bed apartment type. Thankfully I get enough deer by just wandering about and don't need a high seat yet.

The need for annual inspections, cost of setup in time and resources along with potential for it to be wasted by trees falling over, passer by stealing or vadalising, setting them on fire or even going up them despite warning signs, having an accident and claiming compo makes them a non-starter IMO, but some like them for

You people live in a different environment. You can spot deer from a safe distance and then approach it.
If you stand on a hill around here and try to make out deer you won't have much luck. There are trees in the way or the opposing hillside will not be on your lease any more. Plus you hardly have deer standing in the open during bright daylight in Germany.
The classical stalking is a no-go in most areas in this country. Deer may be daft, but not that daft. In our small scale structure of the countryside they will have you on the screen before you even know they are there.
I'd love to do some active hunting here at home, but it's just not possible. You have to sit and wait.

Same here. There are area's where you can stalk on foot but in lots of parts of Sweden you would be hard pushed to see 50 mtrs in the forest. Most of our hunting is done from raised hunting stands.

This is an additional issue. Only a raised position will often provide a suitable back stop in our densely populated country.

There are parts of UK, where I'd say you're teaching grandma to suck eggs, on the density and placement of dwellings in stalking environment.

According to Finnish hunting legislation, you cannot discharge a weapon closer than 150 meters to a dwelling, unless you have permission from the inhabitant. In Estonia, the limit is 200 meters. Compared to that, UK stalking sometimes feels like roaming suburban gardens.

1. asleep; and
2. out of the seat.
He now ties himself to the seat. Sounds very sensible to me.

I used to get the drowsies when sitting out at 4-5am, now I only do evening work.

How I hate to see nails in a high seat... You never know what's going to pull away next. My one (and I hope only ever) high-seat accident was the result of someone using nails instead of screws. I broke 2 ribs and wrecked a rifle, but it could have been far worse.

Not in the vast majority of commercial forestry you can't. High seats in the few open rides at dawn and dusk are the only way. Plus we have the additional challenges of high public access to many of our forests.
Not all Stalking in the UK is the romantic picture of red deer in the Highlands!

There are very few routes I can stalk on foot on my ground due to nearby buildings, roads, paths and wandering walkers. By contrast, I can cover all the best parts of the ground safely from lean-to high seats.

Hm, first jet fighter, first modern sub machine gun, technically they were ok but a follower culture existed then and still does somewhat over here and by using that Germanic trait they were totally mismanaged /misused and it follows them around as this post shows yet again. All those here that I know were born post war and just want to get on with their life.

Lol…it was a stab at humour…although in fairness I think the U.K. still totes up the most inventions after Switzerland and followed by the US, so the U.K. are pretty industrious…
