Does everyone “tunnel” the anus and other gralloch questions!

Just wondering if everyone does the above I have been (I find it a bit of a pain tbh), although I recently read you can pull the pellets down and cut near the top? Also bonus question is there need to open mech and tie oesophagus if doing a suspended gralloch. I typically work bottom to head and pull it all down. Still fairly new to all this so just wanted to range check a few things.

Always tunnel as you can never get all the fumen out by squeezing down - if you suspend then you can do it as the first part of the gralloch & it breaks the vacuum making the first incision into the body cavity safer too. Never tie the oesophagus off when suspended or field gralloch - why risk a cut & risk a contamination when it's not necessary!? - pull the whole lot down, cut down the side of it through he skin in the neck right up to the jaw leaving it all attached & then take the head off. Complete system out in one piece from one end to the other & no leakages?

Yes that is what I do. Many thanks. Just need to get a bit better at the tunnelling bit.

How would not towing the oesophagus mess things up?
I’m fairly new to stalking, but the one time I did suspended without tying off, all of the stomach contents made their way down the pipe, so when I removed the head there was green mess everywhere! Don’t know if I got unlucky as lots of people seem to do it this way

I was once shown a tunnelling technique by a surgeon who did a lot of bowel surgery - it's the way they did some procedures in theatre  I'll try my best to describe it in words but I should really take some pics sometime... It's like a slightly more refined / cleaner way of doing this:

1. Open the main body cavity and work all the poo down the colon away from the anus.
2. Use a pair of "lane tissue forceps" to grasp and hold either side of the anus - this kind of thing but cheaper stuff is easily available. I've got several pairs that live in stalking jackets Lane Tissue Forceps With 1 Into 2 Teeth And Box Joint 200mm | Health and Care
3. Cut around the anus, knife slightly facing out into pelvic cavity so you don't nick anything. Holding the anus with the forceps means you can keep some tension on the skin and make it easier to cut cleanly.
4. Once you've cut the skin around the anus, withdraw it and keep trimming around the rectum as you withdraw it. Similar concept to the Jelen video linked above.
5. Once you've freed it all off around the inside of the pelvis then it will drop back into the body cavity without any pulling, no poo squeezed out and no burst bladder. You can cable tie it if you want for belt and braces approach.

Leave everything attached until you have removed the head. Sometimes happens that you get green making it's way out of the mouth when suspended but no issue if you don't cut the oesophagus until everything is clear of the carcass.

More stuff to carry but has anyone ever tried one?

The less I take out shooting with me the happier I am, too much stuff is just a faff.

Always tunelling and end up with the rear end and head attack, and everything else in between.
Cleanest way to do it
