Is he "one" something? Kool Aid? What? English guns! Yeah right!

Thankfully , we are on the receiving end of the depressed market for SXS shotguns in the UK . Some of the gun shops I frequent have imported , literally , hundreds of them . Some are a bit rough , but there are some beautiful , best quality guns selling for a fraction of what they were a few years ago . I'm holding out for something nice with back action sidelocks , rebounding hammers and a Jones under lever , apparently , there will be a few available before Xmas . The above pretty much says where I fall in the new O/U versus vintage SXS debate . That being said , we're not looking at a lead ban here.

I was shown a few weeks ago a lovely 16bore boxlock non ejector by a provincial maker in a UK gunshop. Dealer had just agreed a price with his US counterpart. The gun fitted me perfectly - and being a lefty, well fitting guns for me are few and far between. He suggested I made the US dealer a very good offer, which I did. 24 hours later US dealer that he had already sold the gun, sight unseen to one of his good customers who had paid more than twice what I had offered.

Slots aren’t required for shotguns over here, we can own as many as we can secure. Are they limited in Ireland?

I have an old Laurina SxS, twin trigger, prefer it to my beretta OU!
Here all guns are firearms. In theory the can have as many as you want but you must justify each one with a good reason to possess.
Once you go above 6 firearms there are enhanced security requirements.
Each cert costs €80 for 3 years.

So, different to the uk then where all guns are firearms but are split into section 1 (FAC required) section 2 (SGC required) section 5 (prohibited) section 7 (complicated).

For an SGC no good reason is required either for the certificate or for any of the guns, so no need to justify each one and you can have as many as you can secure. So having 1 or 2 SxS that you rarely use isn’t an issue. Or 4 or 5 .410s for ratting….

Hmmm.
Funny old world. Currently in NI all firearms incl. air pistols must be held on an FAC (no I don’t know why either). Air pistols are treated the same as bullet-firing rim or centrefire pistols and can only be used on approved ranges. There's no prescribed limit on firearms numbers/types provided you can satisfy the authorities with good reason for possession - many club members have significant numbers of centrefire pistols and rifles for various differing competitions and air/rimfire/centrefire rifles can be held for field use for vermin/deer control as required. Zeroing of firearms for the field can be carried out at approved (Club) ranges or on lands where permitted. Comparatively recently a chambering 3 banded-system was introduced for field rifles.
All that reads fine until you try to renew/vary/change your FAC - then it all falls apart as the firearms licensing process is in utter freefall - nothing new there then!

Minor update as informed by my RFD today. The one-for-one process also includes target rifles but only for precisely that chambering e.g. .308 for .308 i.e. not just anything in the respective band. I still don’t know why not!

The decline of the Western world continues, I was mooching around my local gun monger’s emporium yesterday, he has an E.J. Churchill pigeon gun, nice bit of engraving, box lock non ejector 3” chambers….yours for £130.
