Mucked up my renewal - going to be expensive

I have been very busy but also prevaricating about renewing my FAC/SGC. Got round to it this morning, only to discover my licence expires tomorrow. I've had to take them all to a local RFD who is charging me through the nose for lodging. Fortunately, a mate is taking my shotguns for free (or for a beer or two!) but apparently because I submitted so late, they'll treat it as an initial grant and it could take months (Surrey/Sussex).

Keeping fingers crossed but it's going to cost nearly £2,000 a year to have them in storage (5 rifles, 3 shotguns - although I'm getting the actual owner to pay for those - £4+VAT per gun, per week).

I'm legal, at least but it's really frustrating when all their e-mails and answerphone say they're dealing with a huge backlog. Sadly my mate in the police has just left so doesn't hold any sway but he did contact his old manager who told him it would go down as an initial...

Ah well. I'll leave it a few months and then look at just disposing of the rifles as it's not worth paying that much to keep them, frankly. Shame.

How could it go down as initial when you already have a FAC in place? Also if the license expires tomorrow, if you apply for the renewal today, I believe legally it should be fine. I would wait for those more aware of the law to comment but the route you are taking seems to be excessive and expensive. If you are able to get the police force to treat it as a renewal, you can keep your firearms/ shotguns at home and continue to use them as you are within the law. I am still pondering over how this can be treated as a new one as it could be unlawful. I would recommend getting legal advise as something doesn't sound right to me. Waiting for opinion of others in here as I am most definitey curious of this scenario.

I have had to lodge some guns with rfd on two occasions once for about 6 months (4 or five rifles can’t exactly recall) on both occasions the storage costs didn’t seem that bad. I would contact a few rfd to get better value. ( last time was db guns in Thame and Brian was very reasonable)

All very sad and compounded by the fact your RFD will very likely be uninterested in purchasing the rifles or at best will offer you peanuts. Best to take this thread down now if you plan to sell in the SD Classifieds so we don’t know you ‘need’ to dispose of them.

I'm not the only one on here been waiting a year for a renewal. Best of luck!

Take it up with your FEO, they should have contacted you with a reminder to renew!

Sussex are 6 to 8 months for grants. If you apply before expiry, even if it’s a minute before expiry, it’s a renewal not a grant. However, once the licence has expired there is no period of grace. (If you apply 2 months before expiry you get a statutory 2 month extension. If you apply 2 minutes before expiry - like you - then you don’t).
Once it’s expired the guns must go to an RFD or licence holder.
Having re-applied does not make the licence valid again, despite comments above.

My mate struggled to find a rfd who could take any more guns in storage as there all chocker around here due to the delays with processing and late medical records

You did read the first line of the original post, didn’t you?

I did
It doesn’t say a reminder was sent so it’s a valid question
Also , if your application went in even a day before expiry it’s a renewal not an initial grant

Also instead of contacting your rfd you should have contacted your feo about a covering certificate (sec7 ?)
Cannae mind, but anyhoo there is a facility for a temporary certificate to allow you to keep your guns whilst waiting on your renewal.

I contacted my FEO and was told he was away until tomorrow. At least this way I'm not in illegal possession

To the best of my knowledge, I've had no reminder. Apparently Surrey (who now cover Sussex) say it's the holder's responsibility

Surrey/Sussex currently taking 12 months for new grant IF they’ll accept it. Most FEO’s in the force area are running about 200 files each. Anyone not submitting a renewal 3 months before expiry will not get a temporary extension at all. Best of luck but it will be a long process.

Read the statutory guidance it will be grant once certificate expired you are a grant. You need to submit you're renewal within the 8 week period to qualify for the temporary permit. In any event you are sent an extention then the temporary certificate

I did submit my form before expiry, just not 8 weeks before
