Lamping Foxes

At home, I use a bait spot that’s on there travels. Carcass of a cooked chicken, dog biscuits and canned dog food all work well. Then a trail camera and figure out what time they are about. Let them have a couple or three days to get confident. This cuts down your waiting time. It also means you are putting the fox in a place with a safe back stop. Mount wise I am on a tripod Death Grip, a thermal scope. I don’t need to call in and so far have yet to shout to stop them as they are preoccupied with munching dog biscuits.
As an aside, what round are you using? I tried both Vmax and Gamepoint. I was shooting at 50 yards and found the Vmax better.

Funny how we all do thinks so similar but slightly different - i always give a little hey on the bait - just to get the to look up and freeze

hi there just two but one note worthy! due to a car breakdown havent been able to bait up on some rabbits and I had an encounter late saturday night after the rugby against new zeland (lets not get into that ) a fox was calling right out beside my house on the field behind it (this was fairly late around 1am normally I am in bed by 11)i did do a few quick flashes with the lamp but no luck it was VERY close though I have picked up my spy cam I got a good deal on a spy point force 20 2nd hand as my budget was limited and it has arrived today so I will be baiting up tonight with some fish oil and a few dog nuts and some scraps until i get my car back then it will be rabbit on the menu for mr.fox... will try and bait it every night and hopefully by the weekend i can pick up on his schedule!

well put the bait out last night around 10:30, didnt see anything on the camera when i checked this morning bar the odd sheep, I did notice a fox scat about 20 yards that looked fairly fresh I reckon sunday, will put out some more fish oil + hopefully getting the car back tomorrow or this eve for some rabbits..

Really you can put anything edible out for foxes to eat. Dried dog food, leftovers, bones from boned out deer.
the important thing to my mind is repeatability. It’s there every night, night after night.
I have 3 bait spots and work them around the week. 5 foxes off them last week. I have trail cameras on 2 of them so I know when Charlie is pitching up. The 3rd spot is a field with a good overwatch. After 2 nights it’s pretty certain he’ll be along 15 minutes either side the next night.
Generally after popping one fox I concentrate on one of the other spots. Rarely does another fox appear at the same spot unless they are pairing up.

Agreed - they'll eat owt and come back regularly as long as you are regular. Don't worry about sourcing rabbits just chuck some dogfood or leftovers out.

hi lads bit of a frustrating update,
trying to get better with the trail camera, but dealing with bloody sheep scatching there heads on it, and also had a problem formatting it, fixed the formatting and have got the camera in a better setup BUT no bloody fox taking anything.. the thing is too I have spotted him twice now when walking up to bait the area, Ive seen him twice now around the same time 10.30 and same area as soon as I put on the lamp he runs, dont have any time to setup and gone like the wind.. I am using the white lamp so I may try and get a red filter ill have to go into the shop and see... But regards to the baiting any idea why he has not taken the bait? I put up a rabbit on a telephone pole nailed up about 2.5ft and used dog nuts/oily fish on the ground ( this is about 40 yards from where I have seen him twice)

cheers all

Trail cams, NV add ons etc usually struggle with the bigger memory capacity SD cards if that was your formatting issue.

Sheep are a constant annoyance on so many levels!

Sounds like your 🦊 is lamp shy and most probably wary of your bait station. He'll know the food is there. They dont always come into a feed station.
Hard weather and lack of natural food can change that however.

If the area you see him in is safe for a shot, then sitting out on a clear full moon night be an option. It's certainly a cheaper option than Thermal or NV!

Hmmm.
They are naturally wary creatures especially if there is a recent smell of man about the place - even around the free dining table!
I have never had much success with elevated rabbits (except with badgers!) - try wearing gloves to throw loose bait (dry dog nuts are ideal) from a few yards away so that your scent is not immediately present. Persevere with the bait station and camera, preferably away from sheep - eventually it will start to feed there - the lamp is another issue - can you borrow a Pard?
Good luck.
🦊🦊

I'd let it it take the bait, don't tie it up yet. Let it take it....for now.
Can you wait for it from an elevated position once it starts to reguly take the bait? Elevated on from a vehicle? Use a red light or the moon light.
You can't rush these things, they'd be extinct already....

He sounds like a she
Some vixens can be very wary

Keep at it - keep feeding the dog food - early as possible day after day

Give it a good week - then you should get a result

Does your camera no have the option to only work during set times? By nature of my work I'm surrounded by sheep, so set timer shutter from last light to first & it minimises wooly photo bombers!

Makes sense what ye are saying so from now on I will be wearing gloves and I will take down the rabbit and leave him and see how that works. Will continue feeding the dog nuts and scraps I have, the weather idea defiantly makes sense I have seen alot of fox marks from him digging into the ground looking for snails etc! Will update how it goes during the week!!
Going to try and get that red filter aswell
