First foray into ‘premium’ scopes? What would be good?

I think that in yesteryear the ‘premium’ brands were premium in all facets. But nowadays everything is built to a price and therein lies the issue - as if your brand attracts a price inflation and you need to retain your healthy profit margin, but you need to hold an rrp then the only option is to drop the cost of production and that means lower quality parts.

Buy an unknown or lesser known brand then the price inflation is reduced to a degree so the proportion of material cost to rrp is higher.

There is also one additional factor that no one is considering and that is your eyesight. I am nearly 50 but don’t need glasses and have always had good night vision (ate my carrots as a boy!!) so maybe the reason why I and others are able to use lower ‘quality’ scopes without issue is because our sight is better.

Who knows!!
I think this is pretty much true, at a point in time things stopped being built up to a particular quality and stared being built down to a particular price. Happens in all sorts of things/industries and as you say the big boy brands which got their name producing superb products at one stage still trade off that name but maybe don’t actually always produce that level of quality anymore…

Leupold also make a grand scope for your £'s if you're set on getting a zoom scope you could do worse than going for their 3-9x50 just look at some of the Alaskan programs on DMAX and you'll see Leupold adornment on most of their rifles. I've had one of their Euro 30 models on my foxing rifle for years. You'd pick up a mint 2nd hand one plus good mounts for your budget.

I have always wanted one actually 😎😎😃

You blokes that advise that you have had trouble with high end scopes and presumably on suppressed rifles make me wonder why it is only you lot ha ha.
People wince when they hear the word 'recoil' of a 30-06 or the like. You want to try a .358 Norma Mag, recoil is ferocious to some. My Kiwi mate said no after a shot and took my 7mm mag instead. My .338 Lapua makes others look tame. my 9.3 x 64 Brenneke loves shoulders lol.....anyway point is they all wear a variety of scopes Zeiss/Swaro/NF and there has never been a problem.
Rocked this sweetmeat calf this morning with a noggin shot, used a .300 WM with a 3.5-10x44 Conquest on it, btw that rifle and scope combo have real credentials.

I reckon you fellas have wives that twist the scope dials when you are not home ha ha.

head calf WC.webp

An average springer air rifle has more impact force to the scope than your big boomers.

How a scope is mounted is an equally important factor.

How mamy shots do you put through such a rifle every year? Ammo must be around 5 Oz bucks a shot, at least? Or are you reloading with the precious ADI powder that we can't get?

That deer would be just as dead with a .223

My night vision is better than your night vision because I don’t where glasses. I’ve read some stuff on here lately but I have never before read that someone’s night vision had anything to do with whether people wear glasses or not. I have certainly never had that checked in SpecSavers! 🤓🥸😎

Do you own a high end scope? I do and I can't see where quality has been compromised. Sounds more like jealousy than from any factual evidence. What is a fact is that Swaro and others have really long warrantees. Therefore, if they compromised on quality their spares and repairs department would be rushed off it's feet resulting in huge costs to the company and loads of moaning from irate customers on here. You certainly don't see the moaning on here about them so maybe it's just not pretty much true at all?

I am in a similar boat, constantly thinking of the glass on my rifles, thinking they could be better.

If you are going from sub12 to deer calibre with the same scope then I would definitely go for pa as you are shooting at different ranges, also variable power as the kill zone for different quarry needs different mag in my opinion.

Personally, I would wait and buy a scope for a rifle, calibre and purpose.

Morning mate, not quite sure why you feel the need to be quite so aggressive but anyhow. In answer to your question, no I don’t own a premium scope which is clearly stated in the first post and title of this thread. Secondly, not sure quite why I would be jealous of anyone with an expensive scope, or an expensive anything for that matter but there you go.

I was talking more generally about other industries of which I do have experience (mostly woodworking tooling and machinery) at a point companies definitely did stop producing things up to a quality and begin producing things down to a price which does add up to a compromised product for the end user. They use the name they once had and people will still purchase it because of the perceived value and cache of the brand/ product. It’s rarely bad gear per se but is certainly worse than it once was and you are right the warranty department’s and repairs do a lot of work and there is lots of chat on other forums/places about things being poor. I’d imagine it’s the same for cars and lots of other things, depends what you know about and are into.

Anyway all the best. Enjoy your lovely scopes, I hope to be able to try one at some point.

I'm so sorry that me pointing out your obvious errors, offended you. No where in your post do you state that you were talking more generally about other industries that have nothing to do with scopes though. Where is the relevance to woodworking?

‘Happens in all sorts of things/industries’ so I did state it explicitly. I also don’t think it’s that difficult to infer from the post I was talking generally. I wasn’t offended I’m just not a huge fan of people being needlessly rude, you’ve clearly decided to double down which is fine, all power to you. I’m not really here to argue on the internet, so wish you all the best.

Nope. I have read your post again and it's pretty obvious that you were talking about scopes and especially obvious when the thread is about scopes and you're replying to someone who's talking about scopes. Please don't lower yourself to becoming another one of the many posters on here who feel the need to continually comment on stuff they know absolutely nothing about. This site has got worse for it of late. Stick to what you know. Oh, and please don't ever accuse people on here of being aggressive. I have no idea where you came to that conclusion from? People have lost their FAC for less! A grown adult should know better! Additionally, starting the post with the 'Morning mate' is not a good way to start a post to a stranger and shows that it's you who was not in a good frame of mind!

I started the whole thread because I know nothing about it. I was only then trying to be involved and learn from others on here and the collective knowledge and give people the respect they deserve for taking the time in replying to the thread I started by answering them? Is that not the whole point or have I completely missed something?

No problems, happy to edit aggressive to rude.

Let me know what you’d like me to address you as in future.
