Maps on phones and Os and sat photos

Alright folks

Was wondering if I could pick some brains of folk who understand how to work ur phones and get maps and sat photos up on them.

And I apologise in advance as some of the questions are pretty basic smart phone use but I'm just absolutely clueless with phones.
Me posting this on here is quite advanced for my capabilities.

Wot is the best site app to use that u can mix OS maps and areil/sat photos?
I used to use bing but it doesn't seem to have an Os option anymore.

So 1st question is wots the best site/s to get decent maps/OS and ariel/sat photos?

Was trying to get a decent sat photo of the work site for tomorrow, tried Google but it had a big shadow over area, I couldn't even find where site was as couldn't make out the forest tracks.
Thankfully bing was pretty clear managed to find the wood and get a good idea of it layout.

But does bing work with ur phone?
Like if u were getting pins dropped, any time I've had a pin dropped always been on Google maps
Also does ur wee blue dot to show where u are also show up in bing maps?

If ur going to a remote area with patchy signal can u save or download that screen or even take a screen shot ( I don't even know how to do that)
Would even be handy to text it too the other lad he's worse than me with phones and tech.

Ideally want to get the screen I just had up when I'm standing there on site with the other lads and we can see wot we're talking about But not sure ill get a signal up there.
Or meet up at lunch time and ideally we could see how far throu the wood we've came and how much still to do.

I've asked the question as be handy for work but could be right handy for stalking too.
I dunno if many have looked at a sat photo of their ground and zoomed right in, if uve got a good photo ( sometimes u have to switch from site to site to get the best photo) but even in remote areas amazing the detail u can get.
Sometimes u could almost couldn't individual trees, see which way ploughing goes, see any rides or paths or windblow.
A right handy tool for stalkers too.

Cheers

As said above, OS Maps app is the best for getting a detailed 1:25k topo map on the phone with grid refs. Subscription not the cheapest but worth it IMO. Can download maps and screenshot.

Personally found Bing maps to be the (Microsoft's search engine) to have some of the most current satelite photos that are free to access. Supposedly gets data from Microsoft's latest flight simulator uploaded onto it...

If you are really handy with the tech, it would be ArcGIS but that is another level above me!

PM if any questions @countrryboy

Side by side map OS and Google, plus other combinations 👍

I use the huntstand app. It’s American but fine used over here. Will give wind direction, location, distance, area, and all manner of other stuff. It’s free but with a few ads but they don’t get in the way.

Tbh where ever I go I use the o,s maps which come with a free digital download, no subscription.
And nowt to do with me but Black's outdoors are selling them at £7 each so I've got most areas covered.
The actual O.s online site seems a bit of a faff compared to the download site imho.

Anquet maps for OS maps. I found OS own app useless for creating tracks for hiking. Anquet is about £30 for the whole of UK 1:50000 HD and 1:25000 HD. You can also download all maps so no need for internet to use the maps. These is no limit on how many devices you can use them on. Windows software is good for making trak maps that you can then send to you phone by syncing. I don't think it has sat images but never really looked. I use 1:25000 HD maps.

The OS App is very good, but for a free site with OS maps have a look at Streetmap - Maps and directions for the whole of Great Britain

You can enter a town or village, a postcode, or an OS Grid Ref and then use the Zoom to get to a 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 maps centres on that location. Take a screen shot and send it to your mobile phone.

If you wanted to share information you could also use the What3words (W3W) app, but first change the display settings so that the secondary display in the Search bar is for the OS Grid Reference. Then find your location using the normal search - you don’t get the OS maps but you can see a satellite photo overlay - and, once you’ve found the exact spot, tap on the map to get a W3W reference that you can share with others. You will also see the OS Grid Ref.

Here are some screenshots that might help.

First, download the W3W app to your tablet or phone, from either the Apple Store or Google Play

Then, go into Settings / Display Settings and add the OS grid ref as a secondary display:

Now Search for the location you want to look at, using an address or postcode - sadly the W3W app doesn’t seem to let you search on an OS Grid Ref any more.

You can see that the search bar now shows the OS Grid Ref. You can zoom in and out, down to pretty much tree level, and tap on the globe symbol at the bottom right to toggle between a Satellite image and Google Maps (you can switch in the App between Google and Apple maps).

Once you have found the exact spot you want first tap on the Save button to keep it as a favourite (you can add a label here if you want), and then tap on the Share button at the bottom to share the location with others via email, text message, WhatsApp, etc.

You can also take a screen shot on your phone for offline use - how you do that will depend on the exact model of phone you’re using.

You could try Footpathmap.co.uk
This has OS maps, Open Street Maps and satellite views.
Subscription is £3 per month.

Google Maps and Google Earth are pretty useful for looking at an area. Google Earth particularly has a measuring feature so you can measure distances - and its detail is pretty damn good.

I also use navionics when sailing.

However if I am navigating either in the hills on foot / skis, or in the boat at sea I still much much prefer paper maps and charts. An iPhone sized unit is not big enough to view a large area and really get an understanding of your route.

They are very helpful in pinpointing exactly where you are. But batteries and cold weather don’t go well together and they always seem to fail at critical times.

DO NOT RELY ON WHAT3WORDS!!!

I understand why it is popular, but I cannot reccomend this for use in any sort of situation where an emergency response may be required, especially in forestry. Spelling or typing out 3 different words leaves a lot of room for error!

It's not an accurate system, fine if you want to use it in an urban setting but searching a 50-100m²+ for a possibly unconcious person will mean a lot of wasted (and possibly life saving) time.

Always use a PLB or similar device when out alone.

Must admit w3w was the main reason I went to a smart phone, and never ever used it.
Thought it would be great for finding new sites ( work in forestry) but most bosses/operators just use drop pins which works very well.
I'm probably doing something wrong with w3w and probably meant to link it to a decent mapping app.
But found the maps to be garbage, couple of times I've tried it to find a w3w ref in forestry and yes it shows where the point is in relation to u, but doesn't show the forest tracks to get there, most forests are just a mass of featureless green.
So I've just gave up with it.

I generally use the OS maps to find the site by following the forest tracks in and then switch to ariel/sat photos as u can then see the detail of the trees, direction of ploughing/planting, windblow etc.

Must admit I managed to take a screen shot for 1st time ever and it was right handy sitting in the van looking at the job and the sat photo, so we could plan our day out

Do many folk use avengis maps? I've heard it's meant to be half decent

Cheers everyone who gave a detailed reply, I'll have a right good look over the next couple of nites.
I'm trying to get better with tech.

As a real jump forward in tech for me but do any of these apps work well alongside a drone and it's camera?

Avenza maps can be good but you have to supply your own georeferenced map. However With the map you can then use it outwith phone reception.
