300 Win Mag.

For many years i shot a 300 win mag, Both in Scotland and the Midlands, I stupidly gave it up, and replaced it with a 308. Never really got on with 308. Now i shoot a 6.5x55 and a .243.
Really considering going back to a 300. does anyone have any thoughts and comments on this one.

Go 30-06 under 300 yds there is very little difference between 300 win mag and 30-06. However if you miss the 300 go for it 👍👍

300s are excellent calibres for large deer at range. Can be a bit harsh close in but if you choose your bullet wisely that shouldn’t be a huge issue. If you like it go get one!!

300 PRC that gets you away from the problems with the belted cases .or ,270 win cheap are will hold its own in any fight.

Just throwing it out there; 7mm rem mag worth considering as an alternative. Won’t carry quite as heavy bullets, (c175g max) but less recoil, great bc, lots of down range energy and more than enough for any uk (an European) beasts. Ammo more common than newer/ exotic ones.

Ive got a 7mm Practical being built (7/300 win improved). Best of both worlds. Regarding the belt ‘issue’, I’ve never understood the problem some people have with it. Handloders headspace from the shoulder, the belt is redundant today, but doesn’t do any harm as far as I’m aware.

Likewise I've never had any issues with belted cases in 7mm Rem Mag,(2 rifles)
.300 Win Mag (2 rifles), a .458 Win Mag and .375 H &H (4 rifles).40 years of reloading, thousands of rounds fired.

I think if you like a calibre just stick with it. It’s not about what everybody else likes, it’s about what you can feel comfortable with. I limit my shooting to just two calibres and that way I feel that I really begin to understand that round and can detect easier if something is wrong. Problem is usually the thing that’s wrong is me LOL

Hi

I would suggest you canvas opinion in our Community/Group as to what the thinking is in your local Police Service Licensing Team - seems several are pushing back hard against 'High Muzzle Energy' calibres such as the venerated and very usable .300WM..............even if you provide all the necessary evidence/proof, including abroad, in HOG and seem to also be wanting to check all permissions if not on their 'Register' for 'suitability' of this calibre - if not approved 'tightening-up'.

Daft because there is no ground in the UK that's safe . Its the shooter that assesses the shot whom is safe and responsible or not ! Walking around land is futile time wasting regarding safe or unsafe , we should all be telling those judging us on such matters to explain there thought process on the matter

I found 6.5 creedmoor is enough for my use. So no "need" for the 30's. That said I'd most probably choose one over 6.5 prc.
