Out last night.

My night went wrong....😞
Went ratting, went around the back of the farm to see a small fox heading towards me.
I let fly with ammo destined for short range rats and miss the fox at about 50yds 😞.
Carry on ratting. Return to where I saw the fox and it's returning!
Intersect it and miss it again 😭.
I knew this would happen while trying to burn crap ammo! If I'd of took decent ammo I'd of seen no fox at all!
Then it got worse!
Back on the rats I shoot one through some knettles and puncture the water pipe up stream from the bore hole pump!
I just don't believe it......🤦
Oh dear!
I punctured one of those blue hard plastic hoses many years ago - shot at a rabbit in grass with the .17 and a jet of water shot about 10 feet in the air - never even knew it was there. Fast trip to farm supplies and a helluva struggle cutting and fixing the newly purchased joint and fortunately that was it sorted. I just hope the farmer never rewinds his pipe….

I phoned him and told him. He said he'll sort it today.
Think he's glad the rats are shot. Shot hundreds this year.
What are the chances. You'd never bet on it....

I had a substantial dose of that which you describe, in the pit of the stomach, out on the Badgers near Farndon one night, on marching off from the car the sling parted company with the forward stud, A most pretty wooden stock was broken through at the palm swell ... but the rifle did sterling service same night after a check zero.
Rifle now wears an all weather resin job.
I was very lucky with my CZ .243 Lux with fitted, screw-in swivels. Got home to clean the rifle laid it on the mat and the screw through the sling attachment fell out on the mat! I carry muzzle-up so that could have been expensive. Loctited the screws in place and check them regularly now.

One of those nights…..
Out on a keepered shoot last night for a few hours, we see 5 but no safe shots so none taken, first two were well paired up but the last three were all just mooching about.
As an aside we did clock a motor lamping along the lanes, got a picture of the reg and that’s gone on the local farm watch group.

I'm not sure what the correct derogatory term is but I've become the worst kind of foxer 😥😥 The missus was getting ****ed off with me up and down the stairs every 10 mins to scan with the thermal for the seemingly endless stream of foxes appearing in the field next to the garden so a Spypoint was installed at 16:30 last night and set to ping my phone whenever an image was taken.

19:36 last night while sat wrapping presents with a glass of wine…

So out with the rifle, up to the highseat / bedroom window and bugger me, there's two out there. Shot one and the other buggered off not to be seen until much later in the night (when I was safely tucked up in bed).

If it's any consolation to anyone who got a good soaking and freezing cold "proper" foxing last night, I did have to put my wellies and coat on and go and check I'd hit it as it ran down the hill out of sight 😭😭

Still in 2 minds about the Sako Gamehead bullets in 223. I think they're a bit hard tbh. I've had a run of dropping them on the spot but have probably had about 20% runners overall (on good shot placements). All ran less than 100m but they certainly aren't as explosive as VMax. Super accurate in my rifle though!

I'd take the accuracy first. Thems dead, just don't know it for a very short time.
My reloads do the same but they don't make it far.
Going to try some soft points kindly sent by my good friends on here.

In all fairness, the one I had run last night was a bit far back when I looked at it this morning. Stick with Sako ammo for now I think

Oh dear! Surely not with the sainted triple deuce?

The twipple yes!!!
I think the fox has strange hair cut down it's back!
I'm not sure but think I lifted on firing 🤔.
So annoyed, played it well what with the moon and wind behind me! 😭.
Even went back gone midnight to see if it had come out again....

I did the same a couple of nights ago, lifted slightly at the last second and no doubt trimmed some hairs as it skimmed over its back! It then charged me as I fumbled around trying to pick it up in the thermal.

Been there done that but obviously only once.
Following that solitary incident I added a light torch to the rifle - much easier to pick up the running beast looking over the top of the rifle than frantically searching through the narrow NV picture.
Best thing of course is not to miss - my friend still thinks I he hit this one….

Had a zeroing session in the gale yesterday, for a bit of an experience session in the conditions, I found quite a log of notes re windage etc, good to know how a particular load behaves.
Also had a chance to go to the farmhouse in daylight to drop off the little thank you gift.

I've just sent cards with invoices for time sweat and stress, night time allowance, petrol and of course ammunition.
Usually I just get " help yourself to the pheasants 🙄.
Can poach them from anywhere....oops, did I say that out loud 🤦
