Out last night.

Bugger bugger bugger,, never a good way to start
Indeed. My head's not been in it lately. Couple of poorer shots on deer and 2 foxes missed (out of about the last 12). took myself off down the bottom field this morning with a target and all my rifles to make sure zero is bang on for all of them. Few tweaks required (a click here and there) but nothing that would account for a miss (as expected!) but at least I can remove that niggling seed of doubt!!

Call from a farmer friend early this week, fox had taken one of his geese. Culprit was spotted during the daytime 'biggest dog fox, not seen one so big' hhmmm, aren't they always?
Popped out that night and within the hour stalked in and floored this well sized vixen. Farmer asks 'is that the one?' not wanting to disappoint, the best I could say was probably, but can never be sure.
Call from him again yesterday 'found most of a pheasant and fresh poo, not yet frozen in the little sheep field' the goose thief lives!!!
Popped back there last night around 10pm, a light breeze was dropping the temp well down, and soon lost the feeling in my poor fingers. A few peeps on the caller and the goose thief trotted in close, but the wrong side of a thick hedge. Got a couple of glimpses of him/her but no shot on. Sacked it after an hour, as an early start this morning.
Back at it tonight after work.

I assume you have been visited by the nomads 😁
I've come across them a number of times in the last year, last encounter they didn't see me approaching from their side as they appeared to be busy looking through either a thermal or NV.
One of my farms has lost a number of ewes to dog attacks too.

Just getting in, thought i had better go tonight as the weather is supposed to be terrible for the weekend. Arrived at my usual spot, 2 foxes out on the big field with no back stop (;;;k) !! . Tried calling not interested, I presume they were dog and vixen, so tried a couple of other sounds still not interested, so thought I’d better have a scan around and here he comes, a different fox from my left . He stopped at 80m and the shot was good, quite a large dog and the other two are probably still there.👍🏻IMG_0873.webp

What is the rifle chambered in?

Had the village up this morning, Otto & Frans always indicate all the Badger doors on our trek, this morning I was suddenly accelerated along the lane by my wrists ... faster & faster went the nostrils on the ground, then the yodelling began, followed by a chorus from a Greyhound & a Lurcher cross now towing Mrs Finnbear ... house on the corner where we turn into the village proper, has a very large aviary set up full of raptors all sizes who start to join in with screaming ... I manage to break the Teckels concentration momentarily then a stone deaf Sow Boar appears from a garden .... right in between the two groups of dogs, How I got away with it I have no idea, I do have a twisted ankle to show for it, & no doubt complaints will arrive shortly.

Back out last night after work, truck has gone to garage for a shot bearing on the front axle (£££ its an axle off job - eeekk!!!) so I am rattling about in a hideous tiny little courtesy car. Out on the ground by not long after 7.30pm. Hands are freezing for the first half hour, but ok after that. See a small looking fox slip in and out of the far corner of field I am in, then nothing. I give the odd series of peeps on the caller, nothing much responds. A bit of tramping about to return circulation to the feet, and an hour slides by with nothing showing.
Then I spot a pair of fox racing about two fields away, lots of effort on the mouth caller from me; I think it sounds like a rabbit in distress, in realty its probably more like a chronic asthmatic playing a small mouth organ. Foxes steadfastly ignore my attempts completely. I was going to bring the ecotech, but the remote battery is dead and I could not find a spare - 23A?? why the hell cant it be a normal AAA???
Pair of foxes gradually move further away, probably shaking their heads at my puny impression of prey.
The little fox reappears a hundred odd meters down the hedge, its inside the hedge and the far side of a metal field gate; showing well on the thermal and clear eyeshine through the nv. I deliberate on whether to take the shot, then go for it. Threading the shot between the gate bars, I am aware that the fox is also behind the sheep fencing. Shot feels good but no thump of the impact. I spend the next twenty minutes going up and down the hedge with the thermal. Its a thick one! and I just cant find a carcass. I do find though that the old rabbit warren looks to have fresh workings, and its around the shot site too. Maybe its a small den now? I might pop up in daylight and have another look. I am sure my shot didn't clip the gate, but may have struck the fencing or hedge. Looking like rain soon though. And tonight looks like a washout.
Foxing - you don't win a coconut every time!!

One last night & all credit has to go to @blueeyes
I buggered up my FoxPro & since then he's gone above & beyond to help me out, even sending me a pre loaded micro SD card, gratis. One of life's genuinely good guys, a really helpful gentleman.

It came good last night using vixen domination. Have seen a fox, suspected vixen, during day twice this week. Always walking along top of stream bank going between two blocks of woodland we have. Set caller out about 80yd front & left from me. Trying to hide in hedge shadow as moon was like a fecking spotlight all night.

Within couple minutes of caller see heat come down slope towards stream, soon across and on to my side, walking along stream bank then cutting into field towards caller. Not steaming in but a good steady trot. Found her in scope & watched her stop around 30yd from caller. Cocked her head looking towards caller, trying to find the intruder. The puzzled look on her face was soon replaced with peaceful rest courtesy of Mr.Hornady.

Fat little vixen @ 70yds.
