Why are Fac Renewals taking so long ?

Can anyone shed some light on why renewals are taking so long ? I understand that the Police are looking at people’s suitability since the Plymouth tragedy , but how can it take months longer than it previously did .

Make something painful enough and fewer people will be willing to do it. I personally think the excessive delays are a tactic to weed out the people who don’t want / need a gun enough to suffer the renewal hoop jumping and will sell up. Police then meet the goal of reducing private firearms ownership without actually doing anything overtly.

Because the Home Secretary instructed every police force to review all current FAC’s and to prioritise that over new grants and variations where appropriate, thereby causing a massive backlog to build up.
I was also told that at one time 17 of the 43 constabularies had ceased to accept any new applications.

The Tory party want a small state and low taxes but don't have the bollocks or money to invest to reform the public services to be efficient.

My experience in Scotland is the the Police send out a reminder about 3 months before a current certificate expires
If you do your bit (especially the GP report) and there are no other issues, a new certificate drops through you letterbox the day after the current certificate expires
Even if it doesn't, and as long as the police have all the paperwork no less than 8 weeks before expiry of your current certificate, you automatically get an 8 week extension

A thread like this will always bring out the haters and the conspiracy theorists.
I hate to disappoint you but the simple answer is that government cutbacks mean that less staff are being asked to do more work.
Theresa May cut 20,000 police. That’s well publicised. What’s less well known is that police civilian staff numbers were cut by a similar number.
Cuts have consequences.
There’s no secret agenda.
A lot of FEO’s I've met over the years are fellow shooters.
Now, get back in your mum’s basement and put some more tinfoil on the windows.

Have had to deal with Police Scotland and Essex recently - both fantastic. Plus, Essex and Met (and I think a couple more but forget) turned out for The Game Fair last year and did a same day variation so that shooters could find and purchase a rifle there and then. That's brilliant service. Sorry if your area isn't so good but right to give a shout out where things are running really well.

I hope that BASC advertise this same day variation well before the next GamecFair, and also state which Forces licensing departments will provide the service. A win all round. Encouragement to shooters interested in swapping a firearm to attend. Encouragement to RFDs to attend a bring a good selection of stock. Encouragement to the licensing departments too, as they have the opportunity to deal with the demand for variations quickly and efficiently on the day.

Warwickshire police ,brilliant ,all online ,kept in the loop through the process .one home visit ,quick chat .had to get a key safe which must have been a new requirement from 5 years ago .then arrived all set for another 5 years

Some things take time, simple.
Some folks seem to think the world revolves around them.
Home office set the price of the certificates and all that goes with it.
If a profit was to be made from it you would be paying 5-600 pounds for your co term certs.

Except that pretty much everyone, over the age of 18, applying for a certificate is already paying for the police in the precept part of the council tax.

The variable service around the country is what frustrates most people.
