.17 Hornet vs .22 Hornet

Hi guys, I’ve currently got a slot free on my FAC for a .17 Hornet for small vermin on the farm at longer distances.

Now the problem is that I keep finding .22 Hornets for sale both new and s/h but I’m struggling to find many .17s

What’s everyone’s opinion, apply for a variation and get a .22 or just wait till I find a .17?

Cheers

I’ve owned and shot both for a while and now have 2 22 hornets as much as I liked the 17 H my experience it’s not a fox rifle even with spot on POI
My 22 hornets shoot bang on at a 100 I know some shoot a lot further than that with them

17 H is a fantastic accurate rabbit rifle

I’ve put the tin hat on 😂

Thanks everyone!
The .17 Hornet I’ve shot in the past is a Anschütz but they seem to be like gold dust and with most manufacturers not making a .17 Hornet anymore it seems to be one of those dying out Calibres which is a shame…
I’ll probably try my luck with a Wanted post in the sale section

Interesting article re .17`s for perusal.

That’s a good article for sure! Thanks for that.

I think I’ll just stick with the .17 and a wanted post. Getting hard to order things from the local dealers as they only have certain contracts for select few makes which is annoying…

There are a couple of .17Hornets on both GunStar and Gun Trader right now. Never be afraid to travel to get the rifle you actually want. It took me a good day out to travel to buy my last 'new' rifle (about 4hrs each way) but I got what I actually wanted rather than settling for a compromise, and did the deal face to face with a very reputable RFD into the bargain. One day out = a rifle ready to get down the farm and zero.

Thanks everyone!

22 Hornet been around for 90+ years and still going strong. No reason the 17 can't do the same. As long as there's 22 cases there'll be 17 cases.
22 deff got the edge ( More versatile) in killing power for anyone wanting to shoot bigger critters.

That’s a beauty and congrats! I do like the Hik for Vermin, just quite grissly image for anything over 80-100 yards I found.
Let me know how you get on with it!
I found it a lot better with a decent IR laser torch. The 1 I use is the Darksun Blade.

My suggestion is stick with the 17 but do not settle for any rifle other than the following unless you plan to hand load:

CZ 527 Varmint Thumbhole Laminate

Have to say having mine out today for the first time and a quick zero. I have to agree with your statement.

20mph winds and still managed a really good group at 100 yards with factory ammo.
Even with adjusting the zero I had 6 shots within 1"

Trigger is excellent, so much so I didn't even bother with the set trigger.

Awesome! Thanks for the update, I’ll wait and see what pops up here that would tick the boxes for myself
