Rats, a loosing battle

Right folks , here’s the story.

Hen run in the back garden. Every so often,(months), I’ll see a new hole tunnelling under the run and obviously going for the hen feed. I’ve caught the occasional rat but nothing ever consistent,(mice are easy peasy). And I’m setting the traps by his trodden motorway to the hen run.

There’s a few holes in the hedge where they’re obviously living. Sometimes new earth so you can tell what’s fresh.

So here’s the issues:

1) I can’t use poison because I’ve a lab that will eat anything and it’s just not worth it.

2) I can set traps overnight. Works very occasionally but not consistently. They’re obviously hitting the food most nights but not the traps. I’m covering the food in the run on the nights traps are set so they’ve got no other easy food options.
I’ve also got to remove the traps in the AM or I’ll end up catching a robin or something.

Is there a bait that works consistently? I’m trying peanut butter and also cheese? I’m within a mile of a farm so I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of them completely. They’re not in the house but I don’t like having them close to house.

Short of buying a patterdale and smoking them,(I’d have to cut the bushes away) I’m struggling. I’ve caught 3-4 over a year or so. I don’t think there’s a ‘lot’. But if there was something that could consistently work I’d be open to trying it. The hens nearly got rehomed but we like having them.

Cheers!

Have you thought about installing a drain trap in the pen, plastic drum 12- 14 inches deep with two or three 50mm pipe 12-18”entrances to the drum leading to the void from the pen, cover that with a paving slab after installing 4 rat size snap traps inside with chicken food as bait
Cover the chicken food at night to encourage them to forage and use the tunnels - pre bait and monitor bait takes set the traps to catch just using the chicken food

It will take a while to get the void as a rat hot spot but when bait is going set the traps to catch

When set to catch check every day as is required and keep bait fresh

Advantages
Non toxic
No secondary poisoning
Safe as no access to non catch species
Chicken and dog proof
Run traps 24/7 day and night, always active

I use these in high public use areas using man hole covers to good results

Good luck
Phil

poison is miss understood. sit a course and buy proffesional strength difenacoum whole wheat, bait the holes the rats use then cover with something big. before letting dog out in the morning check for any spilt grain. ld50 of difenacoum is body weight of dog.
repeat every couple of days, if you think bait is slowing down replace with normal grain.
then set traps in a covered station to catch new rats, birds generally only go in a short way long tunnels especially dead end id say would be safer.
you could spend along time messing about and risk the health of your hens. established rats are very reluctant to get caught in traps

Used Arlo Pro off EBay setup to trigger on schedule watching feeder and air rifle with Arken Zulus or similar works for me. I am lucky to have line of sight from house window

Or better still get the neighbours to take responsibility for the rats resident on their property

That’s more like it! I’ll look into this
Small Jill ferret, used to do a chicken farm with one, great sport for the terrier and .410
The ferret would work. Shooting is out with houses so close though!

Get one made....

Will give this a try. Certainly something along this lines seems like a good idea.

Totally get that. But I’ve also seen dogs bleeding out of every end having got into the rat poison so it’s just not worth it

True. But they were there before we moved in. The neighbours also have a compost heap in the back garden. They’ll be on the farm a few minutes away. You’ll not get rid of them completely. But very occasional numbers I can handle given the location. Just need more efficient ways of catching them
Larsen trap Hexagonal type, believe me it works.
I’ve got the clam traps? Baited with eggs?
Anyone on here local to you with an air rifle and NV?

It’s just not worth the hassle for shooting. There’s only a short short distance to the next garden and windows etc. but appreciate the idea!

Spring is coming, they will bugger off into the fields in a few weeks - that is my experience around my chickens anyway.
They seem to be less prominent in the summer that’s for sure. They’re just a pain. Less food in winter so makes sense if they’re concentrated.
not really fair to blame the neighbours if your chickens are the food source

They were there anyway to be fair. Farm nearby. Neighbours with compost heaps etc. Think one of our neighbours had chickens and is planning more as well so it’s just keeping on top of them

Remove the chicken feeder at dusk
Replace with similar containg crushed rodenticide lift at dawn or have it in a chicken safe space
Once there's no chicken feed available they will start on the poison

Get yourself a feeder that is rat proof(that’s what we done), take away any food for one week, using soft wire, tie down poison under a cover. You very plenty of dogs, just keep it away from them. You might have to buy rat poison boxes. The main thing is starve them prior to giving them the goodies

Catch a robin!

Why aren't your traps in a tunnel or box?

Rats love the security of a sanctuary, especially if they can escape, I mean seeing and exit.
