I agree with your first statement however, not the second - if all we want them to demonstrate is that they can put rounds into a 4” circle - make it just that - or show where they want the rounds on the deer clearly….to me it’s not about that specific 4” circle - it’s about correct shooting -
If a candidate arrives and says “I’m going to shoot it in the lower neck” and does so - fine! If they say “I’m going to perform a heart/lung shot” - also fine….(using the outline on the rear as a deciding factor if required)

A 4” circle centre mass is not the only way to kill a roe deer….and people were mentioning brisket shot - if we were that worried about meat loss we would all be head/neck shooting…to me, it’s about an ethical shot more than anything about meat loss, I almost exclusively use pinning shots at 100 yards and over - if a game dealer is bothered about shoulder damage he doesn’t have to take the carcass - but I bet most will, if they need to take a little off the price - fine as well, although I bet most butchers can use a lot of the area.
But then a successful “Neck Shooting” Candidate will expect a higher ranking DSCL1 certificate and medal. The latter with an “oak leaf” border??

The test is fine if every target is the same and the distance and instructions are set in stone.

Yes you have two practice shots in the prone shot.
The guys got those but went wrong with the sitting position and not off sticks .

Strip back a carcass and they are a lot smaller than the profile in the scope on a small deer.
Move it back to 100 yds even smaller.
The heart of a big Red is a good 4" across with the one in a Muntjac about a medium sized lemon.
That white disc is 4" (went for fox bait) 20240115_113422[1].jpg

Hi Tim please could you show the above target on a deer in fur with legs on .
On the types of deer you shoot p.s Don't think we need fox pictures yet 👍 keep the training photos coming

Disclaimer they are not training pictures/videos just in case the 4/5" circle gang try to say different :old:

We have to remember that the pressure often makes people shoot worse. The candidates are probably better shots in reality than their results on the day suggest. They’re also not all experienced shots. A high percentage of the deer I shoot are under 100m too. Being a marksman isn’t required in order to cull deer.

Disclaimer #2 As you asked Bill 5.15pm mj doe being followed by him! She had gone into the wood he was a few yards behind her on an angle, so the leaf is abt where the round went in and pencilled out the shoulder. The missing fur is where I dragged it back 300 yds.
110yds dead as a nit...95gn .243 No 5" circle was used

A big thank you Tim yet again as I asked you to post pictures of the aim point on a deer

Bill
The thing is Bill, the aim point on Tim’s muntjac isn’t the same POA as most people use to shoot larger deer which is just behind the shoulder. Choose that point of aim for a munty or CWD and you will often break the rumen hence he’s moved his POA forward.

baguio thanks for that but i asked Tim for photo's of POA on the different deer as a rough guide for newbies.
So if others want to show photo's with there aim point it may well help other's in time.
Thanks 👍

Same shot placement Bill as the muntjac as it was quartering away around 140 yds so with the heart being much bigger the .243 100gn round took out the heart as there was just bits if it. Ran 40 yds.

on my DSC1 the asessor made it clear that they were not looking for future snipers, they would leave the Army for that.
From speaking to freinds who have done the course, it is amazing how many experienced stalkers turn up and fail the shooting test which prior to the test they have mouthed off how easy it is.
They then go on to make excuses for the rifle being not zeroed correctly.

Out of interest I have arthritis in my lower back (Blue Badge) and I'm unable to get into the prone position let alone get myself up! In real life it doesn't stop me from shooting off sticks or off the car bonnet, however would this preclude me from doing the DS1?

No. They will accommodate your requirements.
