Co op Bank blocking payments to firearms dealers.

Hello all,

I have recently run into a problem that might be of interest to people here.

I was buying a rifle not so long ago and tried to pay via apple pay on my phone from a Co-op account. The payment was blocked, no surprise there I thought as it was a lot of money and I have recently re-entered the country so thought it might be travel related.

So, I called the bank, the person on the phone was very polite and helpful. They could see the payments were blocked under a generic fraud reason. He verified I was the true owner of the card and then unblocked the card, he even stayed on the line as i re tried the payment. No luck, still blocked. He did not understand why so went off to speak to his supervisor. Upon his return he asked be what kind of shop I was trying to make a purchase at (silly question as I assume he could see the shop name in the transactions). I told him it was a firearms dealership.

Here is the interesting part, he then explained to me that essentially it was standard procedure to block all payments to "those kinds of shops as they present a high fraud risk". Surprising news to me as nearly all sales at firearm dealers a recorded in some way. Upon further probing he repeated the same fraud line but pointed out/ encouraged me to read between the lines that this was in fact not a fraud policy but to do with their ethical bank status. He did not directly say this so I don’t know if his supervisor was on the call also but he definitely made it seem he thought the policy was a dumb one.

Despite the lengthy phone call, he could not unblock the payment to that shop which serves me right for not using cash I suppose. (while i didn't have my card on me the gentleman on the phone seemed to think that wouldn't remedy the situation wither as it was a fraud block by the bank and not apple pay related). So, I left without buying the rifle (fear not I am about to return to the shop to buy the rifle). I tried another shop to check the card was working and it went though at regular shops just fine.

So, this thread is really just me complaining about the Co-Op bank and wondering if anyone else has had similar issues with this bank or others.

I'm not a Co-Op customer, but I believe that it isn't the only bank that does this. Of course it has nothing to do with fraud! I could understand it if there is a genuine worry that you are becoming an illegal arms dealer or something (which you clearly aren't). It's simply a matter of the bank telling YOU how YOU must spend YOUR money. And, of course blatant discrimination. If they want to discriminate, they could do it with their own assets, not yours.

It is, of course a matter totally for you, but were it me, I'd consider moving my banking elsewhere.

Personally I think the bank any bank has no such right to decide where are or how I spend my money that I kindly let them hold on my behalf whilst they make a profit out of my money for themselves in doing so.

it’s discrimination.

I would close the account with co-op and let them know why.

I have a coop account and have bought rifles, ammunition and gear with absolutely no issue at 3 local RFDs

This is the first time I have had this problem. I have used this account for all my other purchases at the same RFD and other RFD's.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if the person on the phone had no idea why it wasn't working and just fed me a standard line.

The thing that frustrated me most is that despite verifying me over the phone and seeing the payment being blocked in real time, they couldn't fix the issue.

The whole experience seems peculiar to me honestly.

This might explain a recent experience i had when paying for a shotgun. I am also with the Co-Op. My card was rejected twice when trying to pay via the card terminal. In the end, the shop owner put it through manually as a "card not present" transaction and just took the details from the card straight into the system which worked. I suspect this was another instance of their "policy".

Don't worry I am moving bank. Probably should have mentioned that in the post.
Do you recall the scandal with Nigle Farage and Natwest?
He won his case, banks can't freeze people out banking ( in your case the dealer).
What did the dealer think of this?
Before you leave, maybe you should write to the bank, remind them of Farage judgement and ask for a written explanation as to why it happen.

@Connor
Did you see the OP? What are your thoughts?

Dealer is aware of the problem and has seen it before.

Co-op are famously anti gun and hunting, I remember some years ago (10+) they refused to open an account for a ferret club even though it was club focused on ferrets not hunting
I remember this wasn't it a lady that ran a ferret rescue and they closed her account due to the association with blood sport / hunting.
