Use putangues unless you have super dry soil with tunnels that collapse easily, in which case us tunnel traps (duffus style) The other traps will work but not as well and are a faff.

Use line marker to mark where the traps are. Putanges are totally sub surface so much better if you have dogs running around and you don't need to worry about light or air ingress which can disturb moles. You can just put the sod back on top and seal with edges with spoil from the existing mole hills.

If it is a garden and you would like the surface to go back somewhat to how level it was before, locate the tunnels by walking on tip toes between mole hills to locate the squidy bits of ground that indicate you are stood on a tunnel and you will build a picture of how they meander. Use the spoil from the mole hills to evenly distribute the excavated soil on to the top of the tunnels to help "re-level" the ground. It won't be perfect but it will help. Bit like top dressing a quality lawn to level.

You used to be able to use strychnine... not that I would recommend it now, of course.

That is a horrendous way to go. Agonising, all the muscles tightening into cramps, so hard that the creatures breaks its own bones.

Try gassing them, aluminium phosphide is painless as it acts in a similar way to carbon monoxide, unless you have very sandy soil, in which case traps are the only option.

It is surprising how large an area a single mole can transform: yes it is usually a single mole, not an army of them, so all comes down to placing your scissor trap or barrel trap well if you are using traps.

Moles get along quite happily in flooded tunnels. They pop up for air from time to time, and just keep swimming along.
A mate of mine who is a pro mole catcher has often set traps in water filled runs during wet weather. Makes no difference.

In a raised bed, I have actually 'hosed' two moles out. Still prefer the .410 though.

Ok, so I’m no expert but a couple of years ago I had a mole in the garden.
There are 2 types of run, one ( or more) is a one off spur off the main run for food, and the other is the main run for travel up and down. You want to identify and put the trap in the latter , so dig a little hole with a trowel , drop a scissor trap in and cover up the top completely, no light at all coming in. Bobs your uncle.
Others may have different approaches but it worked really well for me.

Correct works best in travel runs sometimes not so easy to find though tip theyare often in a straight line anfd not so deep you can often see them where the ground has risen they are so near the surface often follow a feature such as a path ,wall or fence line.

I use the 12b, cartridges are cheaper!

Putang are my favourite but it really depends on where you have to set them . Obviously some traps are better at some sets and others good at another type of set !

How often do they come up?

not often and besides mostly they are pushing up from a greater depth than you might think . Better to put a trap in it but give it a few mins for the mole to toddle on along first .

I find they tend to give a small push of soil then come a minute or so later with a bigger one and that is when you need to shoot. I don’t tend to look but normally find there is no further problems, so it’s either cleared off or dead.

My preferred method too. It takes a bit of patience but it works every time.
