Dreaded Moles

Looking for some advice about which mole traps are the best. As I woke up to a new mountain range in my garden this morning,

I find the best ones are the ones that work. And kill them. Which is not to be facetious but to avoid you wasting money on something that will make your lawn look as if it has been recently bombarded by the Islamic Republic of Iran.

i dont think there is a best trap, scissor traps work most of the time but are very obvious, half barrel traps can catch two moles, putang are a bit more fiddly to set and you need two per run.
loads of old wives tales about catching moles.
id try and find the run they are using to get to the mess if hills.
shame your so far from me or id lend you some traps

I’ve found putange traps to work best for me, with tunnels being decent as well. I’ve not got much time for scissor traps, but talpex are ok in shallower runs.

Haven't used a mole trap in years, but the way my father taught me always gave good results. Scissor traps, take the top of mole hill, find hole coming up from tunnel, clear enough space to insert trap. Lay long grass over the hole/trap and cover with soil. No prodding to try and find runs, and at 50p a mole in the early 80s was a good pocket money topup.

can you recommend
PM me your address and I will send you these free of charge. If they work and you don't want to keep them send them back. If you want to keep them please put £5.00 into the Royal British Legion box come November. But for sure not Help for Heroes! The putang is simple to set the other, lowermost, if you POM me a WhatsApp number I'll send a video of. Both are rusty but the springs are strong and will kill.

Thanks for that very kind. I am going to check am for any more evidence, and will give you a shout if they are still active. ( This is the wife suggestion ) as she just sees a furry fluffy mole !!!!

Ok, so I’m no expert but a couple of years ago I had a mole in the garden.
There are 2 types of run, one ( or more) is a one off spur off the main run for food, and the other is the main run for travel up and down. You want to identify and put the trap in the latter , so dig a little hole with a trowel , drop a scissor trap in and cover up the top completely, no light at all coming in. Bobs your uncle.
Others may have different approaches but it worked really well for me.

A combination of a large dose of Big Cheese mole scatter granules, combined with several solar powered ultrasonic ground spikes has worked recently to removed the plague in my garden...
it took several weeks use before it worked but seems to deter them ..so far!

We catch 30 a year with barrel traps. They are fairly easy to set and use
Just leave them in some similar soil for a bit to get the fresh smell off them.
pull open the mole run with gloves on, Put it in the run and carefully press the sod back around the trap. Sprinkle with a bit of loose soil and check daily. If its not caught after 2 days move it.

I lost a good sheepdog to strychnine poisoning. He started playing with a dead mole when I was working on another farm. It wasn't a nice ending, and I wouldn't wish it on anything.
I'm sorry about your dog, but that was the danger of placing a strong poison within reach of it's target. Unfortunately a number of people, murderers included, got a poison withdrawn from the market. Now there is an anticoagulant substance that causes death through bleeding which is some how 'kinder'. I don't get it! 🫤

Anyway, back to the original topic!...
