Rifle sling question.

Ok Troops, subjective I know. But I have real issues trying to find a sling that I am comfortable with, currently on about my sixth 🤔. The next one that I am going to try is the Quake Claw, looks ok and grippy (is that even a word). So, two questions 1. Does anyone use or recommend, or not? 2. Can you remove the swivels? As I said I have tried loads, but happy to take recommendations, deffo not keen on the aim point style as hate faffing about with the straps and my Bino harness, cheers TP

Both rifles have them, very pleased. the .243 has a drone 10 and t8 so not the lightest, they all slip as the nature of out shoulders but not much. (Muzzle down)

I went through a stage of using Quake Claws. Points to note in my opinion:

The good

1. Very grippy
2. Immune to bad weather - they don’t freeze or get soaked etc
3. Wide, so good for load bearing
4. Good quality swivels

The bad

1. When they get older they squeak when moving.
2. Expensive in the UK (not so much in the US if you can persuade a friend to bring one back).
3. Big, they don’t pack down well and take up a lot of room in gunslips
4. Comparatively heavy

All in all good slings well suited to heavier rifles. Ditch them when they start to get the annoying squeak as they get older.

My set up is light so I went to a RedKettle M18. A simple lightweight no frills sling.

I have a claw sling, it's better than some I've used but not without flaws. I find the pad is too wide and too stiff, so that it sits proud on one side when shouldered. The narrow version or the one with the sort of "bulge" shape might be better...
To be honest, I think I'll probably go for a quality neoprene sling next time.

If you can source one an old SA80 sling is as good as anything. Quite versatile in different carry options.

I have the wide one on my 243. I’ve gone through loving and hating it. It’s very grippy so good at holding the rifle in place, but almost to a fault as it makes it more difficult to slip off quickly for a shot. It’s also very wide which is good for distributing weight but makes it awkward. I have niggeloh neoprene slings on my other rifles and prefer those. If I bought a quake again I’d be looking for the slimmer one.

As someone with a GRS Stock and their press stud swivels. I’m looking for a sling which you can remove the swivels and doesn’t slip. (Currently using an old sa80 sling) Can you detach the sling swivels from the Quake?

No, one of them is within a stitched loop.

I have a quake claw and replaced swivels with QD clips need a pop rivet at the bottom though. Melt an hole with wire and rivet. They are extremely good

Another good option for a non-slip sling is to have a leather worker make one using a section of the pimpled rubber material used to make horse reins:

Just keep barrel cleaning solvent away from it.

Why on earth would you use one of them on a Stalking rifle. 1 inch wide and no padding. And the different carry options you mention are only suited to a rifle with side mounted sling loops. Yes ideal if you want to stalk with your rifle like you are on patrol but not shoulder.

Use mine with QD side mounts on some rifles and over the shoulder traditional style on others. Doesn’t bother me it’s narrow, I have some leather ones the same width.Doesn’t slip too much and very quick to adjust length if I want to carry it slung across my back. Also you have the biathlon style if preferred. Not sure I’d want to carry it across my chest or patrol style but that’s an option if it floats a boat for someone.
Simple enough to attach padding if needed.
Cheap and versatile and best of all mine were all freebies.😎👍

Over the first few years of my stalking "journey", a bought a succession of increasingly wider and better padded slings in search of the holy grail of non-slip comfort.
I've now reverted to the simple leather 1" wide non-padded sling that I started off with, and find it better in all respects.

I do the same. I’m actually using the cross belt from an old Sam Brown I never used. I did add a bit of this stuff to the back and it grips nicely. image.webp

What you should aim for (see what I did there!) is a section of sling at the shoulder engagement point that is narrow and grippy. Feel free to experiment as nothing is right or wrong:

Buy any reasonable wide sling and add the Harpsoe Sweden from Best Fox call, best £35 i have ever spent, can climb walls fences etc and even with a heavy barrel and mod it never moves leaves both hands free to hold binos thermal etc Wish they were available years ago. Also single quiet press button to release the rifle. Harpsoe Sweden
